Engine RIP

  CB1N
So one moment everything is fine the car is driving fine downhill 3000rpm-ish... the other rpm goes to zero and the car is dead....

Popped the bonnet and saw the 2-3 inch wide hole on the engine block, just above the oil dipstick and a metal object sticking out of it...

Doubt I can source a new engine here in Montenegro, maybe an engine block could be taken out of megane or espace......

Will be posting pic of the damage tonight, when I am home....

Everything was ok belts along with all idlers and tensioners done 400 kilometers ago at Renault service, engine and gearbox oil and all filters changed too...The car was not losing a drop of oil or water, it was in great condition... I got a 50000 km warranty for the service also.. dont know if it is a belt failure or sth that the warranty could cover... Doubt it.....

mine went bang at 2000rpm.
turned out the camshaft snapped and took the rockers, valves, piston and liner with it :(

still, nearly new engine complete with box, ecu, key, decoder and all pipes and loom for £400 solved that for me.

Here is the pic...

Does this look like a con rod?

I am after an used engine for my ph2 172 2001 (originally f4r 736). Could it be possible to fit bare 182 engine and get it working with my old ecu and loom... Is the engine management different for 736 and 738?

  MERCEDES CLS AMG
The following bottom ends will fit

F4R 730 172 CBOM ( year 2000 - 2001 )
F4R 732 172 CB1N ( year 2001 - 2003 )
F4R 736 172 CB1N ( year 2001 - 2003 )
F4R 738 182 CB22 ( year 2004 - 2005 )
F4R 700 Espace JEOL ( year 99 - 2002 )
F4R 780 Laguna 556A ( year 98 - 2000 )
F4R 746 megane DA0C ( year 99 - 2003 )

The blocks, crankshaft, rods are all interchangable. Flywheels, clutches and sump pans may need swapping over from your old block.

Thanks, I have found an used stock 172 block, but I am considering a low mileage second hand one, and wondering if the 182 f4r 738 would be an option with the old ecu, loom and management overall... A local breaker is going to visit some scrappies in Paris and Lyon, and I need to give him a clue what to look for. So far I am certain that 732 and 736 would fit in, just need to know whether to add f4r 738 to the wishlist...

Thanks.

738 would be perfect, just have to block the vacuum pipe that goes to the carbon canister (or get a pipe from a 182, which is a bit pointless IMO)

Thanks, so I am getting 182 f4r 738 engine if there is one available :) Will there be a need to remap the old 172 ecu?
