Doesn't sound good at all, in my opinion, do not use / run the car, get it looked at by a garage asap! (get it towed / recovered there) DrRollo will tell you what expense can lead from noises!

yeah don't drive it, mine only cost that much cos it sheared off. (same as cambelt snapping)

Guy came, didn't have a clue but advised what everyone here said, do not drive and get it towed to the garage. His exact words were, "it sounds terminal". Thanks for everyone's advise.

Thanks mate, at a guess how much do you think it might cost? Or is it dependant on however much damage has been caused?

Well the only casualty as long as you don't run it anymore will be the dephaser pulley which are iirc about £120 from memory, unfortunately you'll have to change the cam/aux belt at the same time as they need to come off and you shouldn't retension a used belt.

If you go for a full aux/cam kit (tensioners/belt/idlers and you should imo) and the dephaser is circa £400 in parts, about £200 if you just change the belts then labour on top and its a fun job. Also wants/needs to be done by someone with the proper renault locking tools so the timing stays correct.

Holy s**t, got a phone call. No f'in oil!! How on hell did that happen, I bloody check it via the dipstick often enough and nothing came up on the dash!!??

This is not good.

No oil? Yourself or the AA man didnt check, astonishing... Would have been the first thing to look at I would have thought

So now you'v topped it up how does it sound? I'm suprised the low oil pressure light didn't come on.

When did you last do an oil change? Make sure that the sump plug and filter are both tightly on.

I know mate!! Besides I think I only just checked it within a few weeks. I suppose I just assumed that oil wouldn't have been the issue. Yeh the oil meter nor the oil pressure didn't come up. Also where the hell did the oil go there was defintely nothing on my drive?

It's with the garage at the moment so they're just checking what damage has been caused and how there was no oil!

if you and the car is at home go take the plugs out and get some pics it could be burning oil. If your sure its deffo not leaking that is

At the garage I'm afraid but I know the manager so he wouldn't be feeding me bullsh*t.

I see, I wasn't suggesting they were its just if its not physically loosing the oil through a leak the only other thing is it could be burning it.

are they gunna see what they can do then and get back to you?

To be honest it'l probably be okay once whatevers caused this is rectified and the oil topped back up, how long were you driving it while it was f*cked for?

Sure, can't give an exact but a few good miles. Bascially they will fix whatever needs fixing and get it hopefully back to where it was and also identify why it burned the oil so easily. But he did say worst case senario is a new engine, I don't think he wanted me to raise my hopes at all.

Engine is shot...wtf. Don't know what to think right now. How did all the oil get burned so quickly that can't be right surely, anyone have any ideas? I am just bewildered at the moment.

My previous 172 used oil like nothing i've seen before. Use to go through a litre a month and had to keep an eye on it. Never dripped or dropped an oil and could not see any leacks.

My current 172 is fine and barely uses any oil at all.

^^ Exactly mate.

My never eats oil it just goes on and on, I check regulary and it was pretty much always the same, then bang it takes what 2-3weeks to use up. Doesn't even make any sense!?

Ok mate, much appreciated. Surely the garage should be able to tell me this? But I'll do it either way.

Yeah they should have the equipment to do it. But they may have already done one themselves so ask them. if oil is breking into the combustion chamber its probably the stem seals. If its the rings then new engine time.

Are you sure that its not leaking physically? Sorry to sound pedeantic but if the engines not been messed with I wouldnt suspect the engine to burn oil, whats the mileage?

No worries mate, I'm a little crazy at the mo so forgive anything I say. lol

68,000. It is absolutely catagorically not leaking. Its very disconcerting to hear garage say the only option is a new engine. I defintely can't afford one so it would have to be second hand but that will still cost an arm and a leg plus the fitting!

Dont worry about it, its understandable

I was in the same situation with my old 182 it was burning a lot of oil which I thought was the rings as my mickey mouse compression tester was telling me it was the rings, Turned out to be the exhaust stem seals Doh!

So I sourced a 2nd hand engine for 250 quid and dropped that in I got damn lucky with the price as I sold all the other bits and bobs I didnt need such as plenum and throttle body etc.. for circa £200

Anyway back to the problem, I reckon its either gunna be the HG or the valve seals, what was the coolant like?

When they said you needed a new engine did they explain why? has the lack of oil damaged something beyond repair.. tbh they would only be able to tell if they stripped it all down anyway. (unless the knocking had got that bad)

Phone them and ask if they did a compression/leakdown test on it and let us know what they say :)
