Error message

Arite everybody, seems to be plenty of helpful advice on here, so here's my problem.
Daughter has just bought a 182 sport cup '05. The original stereo was put back in it by the previous owner but the code wasn't reset.
We've got the number from the service book and have tried entering it both on the unit and the stalk, no joy, just says ERROR on display.
We've even disconnected the battery for a few minutes, but still no joy!
Any hints?
If the unit was not plugged in properly would this give us the Error msg?

Gotta give it time so it just shows 0000 then input the code, think it's got a time lock on it if you continually put in the wrong code as well.

^ ye 10 try's iirc then you have to give it time to unlock and then you can try again,

Thanks folks,
problem is that we're not even getting the 0000 or CODE on the display. It just says ERROR and won't allow us to enter a code, no beeps,nowt. Thought disconnecting the battery would have cleared it but no, still there! AAAAAgggghhhh.

Just have to leave it switched on until the error code disappears then.
