Ford collectors are mental so who knows. Your not going to spend £91k for the 90's performance that's for sure compared to pretty much anything new. Your not going to mod it. Make up an number and wait for someone to walk in who wants to look at it in their collection. And tbh.. for £91k I would want a Monty or at least a petrol blue :)

Prices have went crazy on them , turning what were once fun cars into garage ornaments.
I think this is the only reason they are staying high , as if the owners were buying them to drive they would quickly realize there are much better cars to own for 30K never mind 90k.

Just look at the price of XR2's too now!! Mint Mk1s are 20k plus I sold a mint one back in the day for 1700 quid because I couldn't afford the insurance! ?
Would b worth 10 times that if I had it today!

All 90's stuff seems to be going mental now!

I've got a white uk spec Sunny Gti-r tucked away in the garage, I'm seriously thinking about taking out the 2.3 stroker engine, Quaife box, big brakes etc and restoring it back to standard!

You'd probably get a lot more money for it in standard trim too.

The whole 90's era was probably the pinnacle of mainstream cars, from an array of manufacturers - each wanting to promote and out-do the other. Just look at the array of JDM stuff from that era too - amazing bits of kit, that we will never see the likes of again.

I was watching an old Fifth Gear from 2012 the other day, they said you could get one from £12k ? More like £40k+ now!!!

What happens next though, things went abit downhill in the next decade.

Nissan dropped the Pulsar, S-body and R-body finished production early 2000's
Toyota dropped the Supra, fast Celica and MR2
Citroen/Peugeot couldn't manage much

It's no surprise really. For many, the 90s is the pinnacle of performance cars. Loads of motorsport-inspired, homologation specials, all the motorsport heroes like McRae and Burns in rallying, while the BTCC was also at it's peak. Cars generally were starting to become reasonably well-made (though still rusted for fun) and had reached a decent level of performance (though seems slow compared to modern stuff), while not having loads of intrusive driver aids. Couple that with the RS tax and this sort of thing was inevitable.

The Escort Cossie is the poster car of that era really - totally outrageous and appealed to a huge range of people; from working class hero, to motorsport nerd, to enthusiast, to modifier. It's definitely a car I still aspire to, but unlikely I will ever own one now. Would I pay £90k for one? I'm not so sure, but someone probably will. It will be interesting to see if any of the more recent performance motors like the Golf R, RS3, A45 etc etc ever attain such iconic status.

Renault shoehorned a 2 litre lump into the featherlight mk2 Clio and the rest is history. With the lack of anything else from this era out there I reckon a minty 172 Cup could be worth about, oh, I don't know, £10k soon?

and the V6, which is probably one of the few actually special cars of the era, which is sad really, but also what made the 90's cars so special.

It was an era when someone would take a look at one of these (in hatchback form) and decided it needed a 2 litre turbo engine and 4WD.
