It's no surprise really. For many, the 90s is the pinnacle of performance cars. Loads of motorsport-inspired, homologation specials, all the motorsport heroes like McRae and Burns in rallying, while the BTCC was also at it's peak. Cars generally were starting to become reasonably well-made (though still rusted for fun) and had reached a decent level of performance (though seems slow compared to modern stuff), while not having loads of intrusive driver aids. Couple that with the RS tax and this sort of thing was inevitable.
The Escort Cossie is the poster car of that era really - totally outrageous and appealed to a huge range of people; from working class hero, to motorsport nerd, to enthusiast, to modifier. It's definitely a car I still aspire to, but unlikely I will ever own one now. Would I pay £90k for one? I'm not so sure, but someone probably will. It will be interesting to see if any of the more recent performance motors like the Golf R, RS3, A45 etc etc ever attain such iconic status.
