excessive emmisions 172

Just new to this. I bought a new cup yesterday, when driving up the motorway a warning light came on in the dash, I looked up the manual, and it told me it was the light for excessive emmisions. The problem is when accelerating, when you get up to 5800rpm it is like a rev limiter kicking in and it gives a cough, i had driven the car 100 miles before i opened the throttle up. I contacted the dealer from where i bought it and they assured me it would be ok to drive it back home but contact my local dealer asap. Any suggestions on what it could be? Or has anyone else had this same problem?

One just above the shift light. orange excessive emisions light - per the hand book. We have checked the lambda sensors and they seem to be in place. Any ideas?

Has MAC bought his new Cup yet?

the light can mean anything from an engine misfire to a faulty cat.anything that causes the engine to run poor and potentially increase emissions will cause the light to come on.from your explanation its sounds like the engine has a misfire at high revs which will eluminate the light.

Yip Neil - got the new one mate. Exactly the same except from clear side repeaters.

My mate HOT GZL, is taking his car into to Reno this week to get it looked at. It seems to drive well up until 5000rpm, it then starts to stutter and hold back. Green shift light comes on at about 5500 and it wont pull past 6K. Oh, and its brand new with only the miles from Birmingham to Scotland on it, so no exhaust mods (yet ;))

thats weird how the shift light comes in early.maybe an ecu or engine speed sensor(tdc sensor) problem.

Same thing happened to my Cup, said it was a "loose sensor" would cut at about 5k ish (sometimes higher) change light would come on early etc etc. It got really bad and then the car wouldnt start! So changed to standard ECU thinking this would fix it, it was then fine for like 5 days and it started happening to the standard car so booked it in. They had the car for about 2 weeks as the fault was intermitent so didnt show up on the diag machine at first. Think they tried various things to fix it before they found the fault!

definatly something causing the ecu to read the wrong engine speed as the shift light comes on about 1000+ rpm early so the ecu is reading a engine speed which is a lot higher than actual engine speed.

Jay,

Why do you think my car got grudually worse then just wouldnt start, then putting back in the standard ECU fixed it for a few days then it started again?

if there was a loose/bad connection then when you changed the ecu back you probably disturbed it and righted the problem for a while until whatever it was worked loose again.might have been a faulty wire as that could explain the problem gradually developing.

Yep, at the start I thought it was wheel spin when I came on CAM, but it gradually got worse was giving a violent cut out at about 5 k ish but if you kept the foot down sometimes it would go over 5k.

The Cup is going into Reno tomorrow morning, so I am sure G will post what the problem was - if they find it 1st time. Heres hoping!

Falkirk mate. Stirling are sh!te. What sensor was it that failed on your Cup? I might actually ask Mac to text you so that if my car is not fixed when I go back, I can ask them to check what you say.

G.

Got the car back this morning fixed! It was a faulty TDC sensor at the cam or something like that, got tonnes of power now!:D

Now i have the car fixed mate, its gonna be stories in the driving tales section, get your racing boots and gloves ready!!! Give ya a bell later from work.G.
