How long's a piece of string?
It can be wildly different from company to company depending on your age,
postcode and a million other factors.

You're probably better off getting quotes for a fresh policy from a modified car insurer like Brentacre,
I found that my car was cheaper to insure with them all mods declared with them,
than it was as a standard car with the likes of Churchill.

It all depends on your insurer, some won't cover any mods. Best bet would be to phone them up and enquire with them. When are you due for renewal? I found btentacrr and greenlight to be great.

Ive read somewhere that actually some companys can give cheaper quotes for certain mods (not just security) because it raises the likelihood that you will look after the car! best bet is to get on confused.com and run some quotes!

Greenlight do not charge for any cosmetic mods or non bhp increasing mods e.g catback exhaust systems, intercoolers, induction kits

That's how Brentacre work,
they told me you've got a vested interest on not crashing your car because you've spent money on it,
and the more years you drive a modified car with no accidents or speeding tickets,
the lower your insurance gets, mine went down by £50 this year.

I can also put as many mods as I like on the car at no extra charge,
as long as I don't go over 180bhp.

Greenlight do the same. If you are going to mod your car and you want to get cover on them, you will be better off with a specialist broker rather than the likes of admiral or any comparison site companies, as soon as you mention catback to them, they think you are asking them a question ;)

Elephant are actually quite good with modifications. Green light couldn't get anywhere near the price elephant have quoted me with all mods declared.

When I fitted my exhaust I rung them up and it was £30 to add it on. Now I'm starting a fresh policy I think the exhaust works out about £20 so it's very reasonable.

Just ring your insurer and go from there.

But do Elephant cover it like for like?

Sometimes you a charged £30 admin but they don't replace if damaged in accident?

No they do not. They will probably replace with a standard part.

I guess I'm taking a slight risk on that but for me personally I've only done three modifications to my car which are low cost anyway so I'm happy to do that. The difference between elephant and greenlight was over £100.

If you drive a highly modified car a specialist insurer is defiantly the way to go.

Agreed but in my eyes, if you buy a full miltek exhaust or have a set of expensive coilovers, I would rather have that piece of mind that they are going to be replaced in the event of an accident.

Just a piece of mind thing but if you have a near enough standard vehicle or modifications that are not worth covering then Elephant is going to be the company for you.

Specialist brokers don't try and compete with the comparison sites for that reason.

:D

Yeah I completely agree with you mate.

Just comes down to each persons individual needs and modifications.

Direct line refused to renew my insurance if I replaced the exhaust with a non OEM product and Admiral also wern't interested so it depends on the insurer. A few wanted £50, and a couple wanted well over £300+ so they got ignored.
IIRC I ended up getting covered for: Lowering spring, spacers, exhaust w/ decat, induction kit and remap (Up to 225 BHP, which it then increases per BHP) for around £100 on top of standard price with Sky Insurance.

Admiral, Bell and Elephant are all the same company but their prices vary wildly, get a quote with Adrian Flux, because a standard car for me was more to insure than one with an exhaust, induction kit, coilovers and after-market wheels. (by about £200 too!)

If you are unlucky enough to damage either of those in an accident your car's going to be written off anyway. With the exhaust a standard system costs more than an aftermarket one so it would be better to take a cash in lieu based on OEM parts costs.

Hi,
If you need any help with insurance for modifications then please feel free to drop me a line. On our specialist modified schemes generally exhaust system changes would have lillt baring.
Regards,
Dan.
