Exhaust has cried enough!

Car  Saab 93 Aero Wagon
Well it was inevitable....44k in and the rear box has decided it wants to make a run for it.
Started it up this evening to move it across the yard to wash it and...bbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrbbbbbbb...etc etc.

Have had to bodge seal it with exhaust heat paste....how long it lasts (if at all) we will see.
Only problem is Prospeed can't get me in until Tuesday 26th....:(

Mine started like that and within 20miles it had seperated with the centre section.

Is won't fall off though.

My back box fell off the day I bought it

The magnex replacement cause the centre section to snap as it was too heavy

The cat then snapped on the bend all within about 30,000 miles of buying.

44k is pretty good. I take it broke at the join where the pipe goes into the box? Be very careful, if your accelerating hard or going over speed bumpes the paste stuff wont hold it.

there seems to be a lot of twisting weight on the rear pipe section before it enters the exhaust
mine would have lasted longer if the mrr had put a bracket on both sides to support the rear box weight

Go to GDI instead Ollie ;)

Funnily enough mine lasted about 44k too :p

Edit: Go thrash it some places, it sounds bonkers in tunnels. Oh and your mpg will probably go up, mine did :p

Correct....the drive home was enough to make the thing split even further!

Luckily Charlie has come up trumps and squeezed me in Saturday afternoon....just not to sure what to do about driving it with the rear box in danger of making an escape!
Do i take the rear box off altogether or try and secure it so if the join does finally go it won't drop off?

Well thats what im considering....just don't want anything melting in the space where the backbox once was!

^^^There were no problems with mine when I done that!

When mine went, I ripped it off...then drove from Birmingham (work) to home (about 45 miles). Then went to Cardiff from Telford with no backbox on!

It will make you deaf in your left ear, but will be worth it mate!

You going for Stealth or cut-in?

Im going the stealth route.....not wanting to go for any pipe on show as im keen on the standard look.
Charlie says they are using a wider diameter pipe for the centre section that splits into two, which makes it less boomy at motorway speed.

It also stops the welds from failing as this was happening on the exhausts Charlie was doing previously.

You'll get use to the change in note from the engine after a couple of days...but you'll be playing with the acceleration a bit more as the car sounds more hungry! ;)

Like it!!:approve:

Right im off to see if i can get the delivery guy at work to trailer it to Cardiff....may have to slip him a tenner.

No results yet mate....not booked in to Prospeed until next Saturday!

When you took the box off did you have to tie the pipe up away from the rear crossbeam or does it not drop?

Sorry mate, thought it was yesterday! (My bad)

When I pulled the box off, I had to remove the hanger from the rubber (I was 45 miles away from home, so couldn't leave it on...just in case).

The pipe will stay up out of the way...but I don't envy you the noise...made me partially deaf in my left ear for the rest of that day!

PS. on the stealth, try not to have the tailpipe coming down too much...thats the only thing I don't like about mine...it does seem to drop a bit too much for my liking!

Hmmmm! Maybe i'll see if i can bodge the join that is coming apart then!

The box is still attached to the pipe but its blowing like a well trained p**n star....so i might try and make sure the box doesn't fall off and then limp it to Cardiff at 70mph!

Its not being driven until Friday now so hopefully it won't get worse!

If it falls, the box will catch the floor. I think its better (was for me) to rip the box off then deal with no backbox. Thats personal opinion, as if it drops when doing some speed...not nice prospect!

Im with you on that one. I might actually make sure that if the join goes that the box won't collapse....

Someone recommended something called Exhaust Bandage

I've never heard of it mate, but the join is or will be corroded, so its best not to be too trusting of it.

I don't know how you are gonna get on...unless you can get someone who can fabricate a piece of metal as an overlay for the exhaust (like a sleeve as a temp measure). Just an idea....:)
