EXT HDD - is it dead ?

just plugged it in and now it makes a beeping and ticking kinda noise in this sequence



beep beep beeeeeep


does it 4 times then stops.


the light still lights up, but the hdd isnt spinning up


any ideas whats up with it?


Its a Western Digital Passport 250gb

If it's ticking, I would say thats pretty dead imo..

Ye if the hard drive is ticking/clicking then its a sure sign of a controller failure.

You could probably get your data back if you had an exact same version of the hard drive that broken as you could just 'borrow' the controller from that..

And for next time.. always backup !!

any tips for aiding back up? (dont really want 9000000 dvds lying around!!)

phew.

Realistically in the home backing up to optical media or another hard drive are your only options really, but seeing at the drive is fucked (from your description) it's all a bit academic now!

I backup to another drive myself, although not as frequently as I probably should.
