F1 is amazing.....

Just been reading that from 2013 all the engines will be 1.6 turbos to improve efficiency. So from a 2.4 V8 to a 1.6 turbo but still around 750bhp.

It amazes me how brilliant the tech guys in F1 are to even think about achieving this.

From back in the day there were 1.5 turbo's running over 1000bhp.

In fact all the older F1 cars on display at the Renault F1 factory are all under 2.0 and are all running over 600 bhp

Will cut the RPM heavily I suspect, so yes the sound will change. Interesting though, provide a real chance for new / forthcoming engine suppliers.

Yes, from 18,000 rpm to 10,000. Approx 600bhp from the engines themselves and then another 250bhp from the energy recovery systems.

German car giant Volkswagen has also been heavily involved in the discussions and has privately indicated to F1 insiders that the only way it would consider entering F1 would be if the sport adopted these new rules.
However, sources say VW is giving conflicting messages about whether it will commit to an F1 engine project. If it did enter the sport, it is expected to use its Audi brand.

Followed by the Audi TT RS F1 Edition no doubt :dead:

they sounds pretty good now tbh, but i'm with Warren, V10's all day long. Will be interesting to see how the corsa vxr engine with 750hp does ;)

I dont understand how they'll achieve huge power from a 1.6 turbo without having loads of lag though. It'll be interesting imo

Bad news tbh.

Bring back V10's.

This. I stopped following F1 when the dropped the V10.

I think EU regulations are dogging a sport which was once all about sheer power and how much money you had. Sure F1 technology filters down so maybe we will get cars with stupid power running 1000cc engines. But big f**king wow.

"We have a very good engine formula. Why should we change it to something that is going to cost millions of pounds and that nobody wants and that could end up with one manufacturer getting a big advantage?"

Well said......

1600cc engines though :s the 2400cc unit is already s**t, doesnt seem to carry the power like V10's did....or V12's

They'll be pretty trick turbos, they wont have to last as long as a road car's turbo either.
In my boredom I've had a look about. They might be using compound turbo's, and tbh from the 10 mins reading I've just done compound turbo's look f**king awesome tbh, they are used in tractor pulling and can run anywhere from 100psi-250psi!!!

  Nothing at the mo :(
Imagine the sales pitch in the US when the US GP comes back,

"what engines they running, V12, V10?"

"No its a 1.6"

"NASCAR for me I think..."

Lol

hahahhahaha proper rofld at this ... like you said i can imagine it

"So what are they? big bad boy v12's?

"No 1.6 turbo's"

"haha 1.6?? wtf is that? my lawnmower is bigger"

could you imagine how fast and powerful f1 and rally cars would be if engineers and race teams didnt have limitations? fast but dangerous

What the actual f*ck.

F1 is all about a big screaming, multi cylinder engine. Not the same size engine found in your nans mini one.

It's like making footballers wear slippers and play on carpet.

I think Autosport did a write up with BMW quite a few years back on that very subject. The jist of it was that the cars would be more covered GT style to allow less drag on wheels, closed cockpit etc. The forces created would make the cars undrivable without some form of G-suit.

Well the Red Bull X1 thing is supposed to be the above really.

It'll be interesting see what McLaren will do if they do end their relationship with Merc in 2016 (currently still signed in engine and sponsorship deal until 2015). If they do, as is rumored, create their own in-house engine then I wonder if they will develop it so that it would also be made available for an updated version of the MP4-12C

I agree with luke, just let them do what ever they want, its limited to their imaginations alone :)
