f4R engine

  Golf GTD Mk7
Why does it have so much unnecessary weight in it?

- Cambelt cover could be plastic?
- Fuel rail guard?
- Big lump of iron under the DS engine mount.

I'm sure there are probably more things under there that could be made lighter.

I was thinking of having a plastic cambelt cover molded from the original one and removing the big lump of iron under the mount. Any other ideas?

Cambelt cover is also the Engine mount bracket though so its gotta be tough to hold the engine up and in place.

Its a mass production hatch back. They didnt build it off the shelf as a race car. It has to be functional, safe and reliable too.

Majority of cars come with a engine cover. Makes it look better. Weighs nowt really. Only issue is heat restriction

Not the top cover. Think it is in the middle or the lower one (not 100%), but it's just a steel plate.

True, but you would think that they could keep costs down. A plastic cover would still be functionally as good. A lot of other cars have them on.

theres 3 parts

two upper are steel

middle is plastic.

The steel doesnt weigh much, to get plastic that strong it would have tobe quite thick, so not far off the wieght.

ive taken that big lump of metal off, hasnt made any diffrence in noise or vibrations.

yeah the ali one. Does it need to be strong? Is it not just to prevent something hitting the belt?

Could do a C/F one fairly easily which'd save some weight........ you wouldn't want to pay what it'd cost though and you'd be disapointed it wasn't shiny bling bling carbon! ;-)

Cheers
