Failed MOT

  Clio 172
Took my 172 to Ness motors in Perth to get the Cambelt and Auxillary done and also the MOT was due so i just got them to do that as well. I decided today to phone them before i made the journey through to pick up my car and i am so glad i did because i was told my car had failed its MOT.

It has failed on the number plate lamp and loom, the exhaust emissions test and the inner driveshaft boot. I asked how much this was going to cost and its going to set me back £799.29 thats including the cambelt and auxillary being done which in itself was a great price for a main dealer at £480 which i was delighted with. I was hoping i'd catch a break and the car would sail through the MOT but just my luck it didnt.

The guy said it had been spewing oil all over my cambelt so i just told him to go ahead with the work to get it through its MOT. The exhaust is cracked but he said they are going to try and get it patched it up enough to get it through the MOT. I plan on getting a new exhaust next month so hopefully they can get it through.

Feel a bit down after this basically be skint all month after all my bills are paid.:dapprove:

Cars mate... If it's not modding it's servicing / repairing!

Yeah it needs done so although i am pissed i understand, i am more pissed that i dont earn more money :D

The car only has a part service history with it so thats why i went down the main dealer route so at least i when i sell it on they new owners know i have taken care of it and had no expense spared.

Mine failed two days ago on a lower ball joint, £12 later and it's done. Best bit was the MOT was only £35 in the first place and the retest was £24...so pretty much the cost of a 'normal' test.

I did however just have the cambelt and auxbelt done at Renault...eek £xxx's!

The cambelt and auxillary was a great price, £480 from a main dealer that was just along the road is fantastic as being in Scotland all the specialists are in England but Ness motors has the Renaultsport Specialist approval so i was more than happy to pay that.

I was hoping for that little bit of luck but nevermind. My courtesy car from Ness motors was a 4x4:D, the Koleos

this is what i am rolling in till monday

Looks like s**t but drives pretty damn good

  Clio 172
Man! My courtesy car from Renault Brechin was a 1.2 Mk3 Clio Ripcurl...SO slow!

There is a crazy amount of gadgets in the car, especially when you are used to a basic 172. I was expecting a little clio but when the girl said do you mind if we give you a 4x4 i was like yes that would be fine but i was thinking hell yeah this should be fun.:D

Coming home i was going along the motorway and i never even noticed i was doing around 100mph it was so smooth, dont get me wrong it took a while to get there but its a great driving vehicle.

hang on so your even considering paying £300, your off your box mate, number plate lamp/loom and driveshaft boot is only going to be at most £50. then emissions, probably lamba sensor £60-£70. welding exhaust just costs labour. way overpriced. the only way its that price is if its the cat but if its a dealer it aint gonna b at dat price.

Ah bit of a pisser that mate, never mind once the cambelts done you are good for a while yet in terms of maintenance :)

  Clio 172
He said the exhaust looks like it has been patched up before, but with the inner driveshaft boot I am sure he said that was the costly part, I am sure it was £149 he said so the other parts aren't the costly bit.

I really don't have the time to go get the car go to another garage get the mot done, its there so i just said f**k it do it because I have two 24 hour shifts in the next 4 days and I don't have a day off till next week so I really don't have the time

tell them they are taking the piss buddy, they will drop the price

  RB 182
If its the inner cv boot, its not a failure. Only the outer one is testable, but you'd prolly want to do it anyway just thought id let u know

  Clio 182 arctic
I am at work just now and won't be home till tomorrow night so I can't really look for the correct prices, should I just say that I contacted a local garage and they said they could do it a lot cheaper?
i would get them 2 explain exactly what it is that has failed and if it turns out to be the inner boot and its still £149 tell them to get f***ed.

  Clio 172
I'll try make a call tomorrow morning.

I'll write it down and I'll write everything you guys have said down so that I'll know what to say.

Could do with it getting it a lot cheaper as paying everything leaves me keith flint.

  Clio 172
They are taking the absolute piss tbh.

If the guy starts getting fresh about it ask to speak to whoevers in charge

I am just going to phone first thing and get a full explanation and if its what you guys say then tell him there is no way its that price so not to bother. I'll try get someone through my way to do it.

I'll be the first to admit that I am not mechanically minded but its something I am trying to get better with. The one thing I do hate is c***s taking the piss and they will know about if after his explanation does satisfy me.

What do you guys think I should say if they say its to late they have started the repairs?

  Clio 172
Phoned first thing this morning and said that I had spoken to a few of my mates who are mechanics and they said that the price is far to high.

The guy said the

-inner driveshaft boot had been spewing oil all over my timing belt so they had to fit a new one

-the number plate lamp and loom is £116 fitted

-the exhaust has been patched up before so they have to try get it through.

He did say he would try to tighten it up a little and to be honest he does sound like a genuine guy but then again I don't have much experience with garages.

inner driveshaft boot - £6.11 brand new
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/k/cv/p/Car-Parts

number plate loom - £35 brand new

numberplate lamp - £10 - brand new

and bear in mind mate get these from a scrappie and it will cost you less than £15. you may not even need the loom, all i changed on mine was the light unit and it worked fine again. the light was £5 from scrappie, and also the clios are all the same light unit 1.2, 1.4, 2.0 etc.

Really appreciate that mate

He is going to phone me monday after its done so if the price is still really high I will show him this and say that I am not happy and that I will be mentioning it on the renault forums. Whether that makes any difference who knows, they will probably not give two s***s.

I might just have to put this down to a lesson learned. My mate that got me into detailling is very good with cars and he said he is going to show me how to service the car and do the simpler things like changing brakes. I want to learn so the sooner the better.

Glad you guys have been here to help

no worries mate, its when they know that people dont know much about mechanics, thats when they try and take the p*ss. but atleast ur challenging it.
there was a thread on here not long ago where some lass had her cambelt fail and the total cost was around £1700+. now everyone on here said nooo way. the job could have been done for around £1000 at a specialist but her attitude was oh well i need my car and cant wait. all i know is for £700 i would rather be without my car a little longer and get it done by someone who isnt trying to rip you off.

That's why I am glad I joined this forum because at least if I have a query I can ask here and know someone will know something. At the end of the day its pish that anyone should be trying to rip anybody off. The more I read here and learn from my mate the better.

Again thanks mate

when taking your car to reno dont forget to pull your pants down when you enter the place...

f**k me

just because they've done the work, DOES NOT mean you have to pay their charges, tell them you're not paying.... see what they say

ultimately they'll want paying for their work, if you're not paying the price they want, they might keep your car, but they wont want your car sitting around at their place whilst they dont get paid, they'll back down and come back with a fair price, they NEED YOUR MONEY just as much as you need your car back

don't let them take the piss

  Clio 172
I'll see what they say on monday and go from there

I may just steal the 200 that was in the forecourt :D

  BMW E46 330i Touring
My 8 year old Bora with 101k on the clock sailed through with a single advisory today...

(sorry, I know that doesn't help your situation!)

Glad to hear it mate

Just because mine failed doesnt mean i want others too. To be honest i just want it back i am begining to miss my little car.

At least after this the maintenance will be at a minimum and next month its a new exhaust. Just dont know whether to go for a 182 manifold and whole new system or just get the 172 system, i would only be going for the power gains not to try make people think i have a 182

  Clio 182 cup'd
£116 for a bulb basically. I had the same problem last year, went to the scrap yard and picked a second hand bulb holder and part of the loom I needed for £5!

They're charging you for a driveshaft I think.

Its the lazy mans way of fitting a new CV boot.

  Westy. MX5
Why don't you do all the work yourself. Ok the cambelt is tricky for the average DIY man, have that done by the Reno boys but the rest is not to difficult.

  Clio 172
Just received a phone call from the garage saying that half the driveshaft was missing so they are going to have to order in a whole new driveshaft at the cost of £119. they said the reason it was spewing oil was because most of the shaft was missing.

So when i asked waht the total price was he said

£863.95

I said i have been doing some research and that i know it shouldnt be that much, he said because its a renaultsport its a special part and that you cant order them sperate.

Thoughts guys?

  www.renparts.co.uk
well we sell the used shaft complete for £80, Number plate light and loom for £15, and its dead easy to fit. how can part of the shaft be missing? the car wouldn't drive.

I said i'd phone them back and that i might come and pick the car up because i just cant afford that.

so in all they want

£863 for

-cambelt and auxillary belt change
-new timing belt
-new plugs
-new driveshaft
-repair of the exhaust (patched up)
-new number plate lamp and loom

my car failed on number plate light/loom. i didnt bother changing to loom just the light its self, got a genuine renault brand new one from ebay for £7 or something and it worked.

maby he means the CV joint had lost a circlip loosing all the little roller pin things, not sure if you can get the CV joint sepperate on the 172?

  Clio 172
Should i tell to go ahead or should i go and pick the car up?

I might phone and say if you cant do it for £800 then i am coming to get it
