Fancied doing a DIY refurb, How do I get the powdercoat off wheels?

As title really how do I remove the powder coat from my 2118's that I STUPIDLY had powder coated white for my track car (I know, I know lol) they are looking VERY sorry for themselves now so I thought why not just try a DIY refurb and if they look crap well I can run them for another year and either see if my skills get better next time or have them done properly. Think I'll go paint over powder though as my wheels must be getting hot as the powder coat has run in places and you can see lips on the rim as if the centrifugal force has been trying too pull the soft powder coat off lol.

Is it something I would have too get done by someone or has anyone removed powder coat themselves. All my local wheel refurb places are charging about £220-300 a set of wheels unless I put them on a pallet and send them too the place in Birmingham who do them cheap but I thought if I can do them myself and they look half decent I wont mind doing them when the brake dust eventually eats them alive again.

you need really really nasty stuff to strip powder coat off, hydrofluoric acid based and before you ask yes i've got some:wink:

Plastic dip spray .. Wouldn't strip them if it was me

I'm in the same boat. Mine need stripping and re doing as they are slightly corroded on the inner are of the rim, air slowly leaks out so every two weeks they need re inflating. Thinking I may give it a go myself as I have access to a sand blaster (no idea what the machine is properly called).
Mine were originally silver 172 cup turinis but the previous owner went darker in a "do it yourself" moment.

I would just give them a light sand do they are keyed and just paint over the top.

Plastidip is another option but I found brake dust seems to stick to it

They are heavily coated in brake dust so and it doesn't wash off or scrub clean (I've tried lol) so depends if they can be sanded and painted over if it will react with the brake dust.

City powder coaters, £20 a wheel, job done.

I wouldn't even entertain trying to remove powder coat DIY.

That's what I was thinking of @Daniel if the DIY option wasn't going too be a)simple enough and b)cost effective Who's bbest too use for postage and is it just chuck them on a pallet and send (obviously I would ring them first lol)

Jet wash and cilit bang has worked for me in the past

I've tried wheel acid, Billbery wheel cleaner, Hot soapy water, G101 and the wheels had wheel armour coating put in before they were used lol

I would just send them away it's too much hassle for DIY.
I tried mine last year and only done two as it was too much hassle, so just took them to city powder coaters.
Don't know if it would work but you could try nitomorse.

Tilling Powder coating in Preston do upto 19" wheels for £120 Stu. That's without tyres though.

Might have a look at them @JamesBryan cheers removing tyres isn't an issue. Would save me messing about with a pallet and sending them Birmingham lol

you can send set of wheels in two boxes at the most, no need for a pallet. be wary though as some coaters are crap with non industrial stuff/finishes...as you've discovered:wink:

Will do anything really - can do them with tyres too but £10er extra to remove+refit/balance per wheel.

+1 for City Powedercoaters. It will outlive almost any spray painted job ; a number of tyre places near me do not guarantee damaging the surface of the finish on painted rims ; I have seen the paint literally fall off with minimal pressure before.
