FAO Anyone concerned about insurance

"Insurance for riskier customers, such as young men, will rise by up to 40%."

good post Si.... maybe people will think twice about claiming for every penny they can get, which in some cases borders on insurance fraud!

Exaclty is so annoying when you get some spotty nosed 17 yr old in a corsa his mum bought him and insures him on in her name then he tries to claim thousands of pounds when someone goes into the back of him.

Such an ar5e when i'm 19 with almost 2 yrs ncb and trying my hardest to get my premium down to find they are only gonna gonna go down by a couple of quid!.

Lol makes me angry (may have guessed)

I have actually heard cases of people getting an extra years no claims having had no changes to the car or anything and have the price go up on renewal. Despite the fact that they were a year older and another years no claims. you would think maybe stay the same or hopefully go down in price but not up.

I am 25 at the end of the year, got a renewal quote on my old clio which was a 1.4 dynamic + and it worked out at £120 more than my previous years insurance. I have nearly 8yrs NCB.

Looking at it i only pay an additional £80 to insure my Trophy fully comp.

It takes the pi$$. The problem will persisit, if the price of insurance goes up, more and more young drivers will be more inclined to take the risk and not bother insuring the car.

F**K THAT! This sucks, half of us are good drivers, shame some have to ruin it!

The reason that insurance costs have been rising for years is down to the "oh I have whiplash honestly gang". See posts on here from time to time saying, remember you have wiplash ;) etc.

A guy I used to work with was a classic case, had accident,(not hurt at all) fake whiplash pay out, then moans that his insurance went up a few years down the line, to which my reply of the 2K you got before should cover it, and you only have yourself to blame!

People that claim as the really are hurt is one thing, but those out to make a quick buck really annoy me.

exactly but it seems to me the honest people will always be shafted for it. The people in the wrong most often get another pay out from elsewhare and they are kept well stocked in burberry and embassy no 1 for another week.

You beat me to it! I've always said that this would happen and it will only get worse, it will switch over to the American system whereby there are different categories within the policy and you have to pick how much cover you have for each part! It's a nightmare and they don't do fully comp 'all costs' options, they seem to max out at $300,000 dollars so if a claim goes through for more I assume you are responsible for making up the difference!?!?

A flatmate at uni was rear ended and she went for her couple of grand and couldn't understand why I was annoyed about it. Unfortunately people are greedy and materialistic and don't appreciated that what you do today may come back to bite you in a few years time. Oh well, thanks everyone whose claimed, I hope you but the money in a savings account to pay for the new premiums!!!

I have heard stories though of insurance companies sending people to a doctor and then automatically offering them £2,000 even though the person had no intention of putting in a 'personal injury' claim!

exactly. Two of my work mates were rear ended by someone in their work van. The driver put through a claim for whiplash etc, took around a year to get a few quid.... but work kept docking his pay for the 'physio' he was getting. In the end he only actually made a few hundred quid...I asked the passenger why he didn't claim. his answer.... he'd had more whiplash on a fair ground ride lol

good on him i say

this country is going to the ameriacan 'i'll sue you' way of life. We all pay in the end :(

At this rate i won't be bloody dirivng at all, already looking at £1200 for insurance now up to 40 on top of that. Fook :(

Well i claimed as my mate drove off a bridge after hitting black ice and i dont really give a f**k if insurance goes up because of it. I feel i am very much in the position to claim, especially as i broke my shoulder and nearly died lol.

As for pricks claiming whiplash from a little bump, yeah that is totally ridiculous. What is the age classed as for "young" drivers is it 21 or 25???

The ridiculous thing is that if you are the 'victim' in an accident then the insurance companies will go out of their way to give you money for you injuries etc... but if you are at fault they will do everything they can to not pay!?!?!?

Why not clamp down on the 'injury' pay outs and 'help' the policy holders?

In some ways it's quite a tricky situation. If you'd been walking along and slipped on the black ice and broken your shoulder you wouldn't have claimed off of anyone. It wouldn't be your fault but it's just bad luck.

Because you're in a car that slides on the black ice why should you be entitled to money? In that instance it's not the driver that's at fault it's an accident and plain bad luck.

I've claimed for personal injury... because I was injured.

7 rear shunts I think it is now in London whilst stationary at red lights (I've claimed on two).

One car totally written off, another left me with bruising to the back of my head, nausea and now I have limited movement in my neck thanks to one shunt even after a course of physio. Every single one of my 6 cars has been hit now, including the 182.

If people learnt how to drive in London and stop smashing into the back of my cars, things would be better ;)

But how does the money make up for the limited movement you now have? If you were out of pocket from the physio then that should be reimbursed but £3000 surely doesn't make up for pain or discomfort etc...

That you've been rear-ended 7 times means you're either really unlucky, or that the quality of driving in the capital is appalling!

i expect the '40% for younger drivers' figure comes from norwich union who don't appear to have any interest in insuring yong drivers anyway. don't think that will be the norm

^^un fuking belivable all of this is s**t, insurance the whole fuking lot im paying £1200 fully comp at 17, if everyone is having accidents why not either increase the age at which ur allowed to drive or teach driving to a highier standard obviously something is going amiss somewhere, and another thing im not someone to break the law but when i see an uninsured driver getting off with a £350 fine after hitting someone it rele ticks me off to think im paying that much they really need to clamp down on these arseholes!!

Rant Over

There are lots of things that get affected, my health and fitness, time off work, muscle loss as I wasn't able to go to the gym, I couldn't drive, I missed things I had planned to do, I couldnt even see when crossing the road as my neck and back were taped up so I couldn't have any movement to turn my neck, mates had to drive me about, I can't even think of all the things that were affected... I had time and extra costs taken up getting cars fixed, why shouldn't I be compensated.

London drivers are exceptionally aggressive and bad, most weeks I can expect a near miss. Just over a week ago I had to slam the brakes on, and stop on a roundabout and put up with a guy shouting wanker at me - HE hadn't given way. The week before a guy runs a red light while I'm turning right on a green filter so again I slam the brakes on, that is commonplace in London...

First they take all there call centres abroad now there gonna up premiums, whats next???probably them crappy black boxes in the boot!!!

Again, that's something that needs to be tackled, but that's upto the police to sort out. The problem is it's far easier and cheaper to GATSO someone than to chase them down and do them for driving without insurance.

They need to have a policy whereby if you're uninsured/untaxed/unMOTd then you either renew/payup/drive to a test centre escorted by the police or they impound your car!

But money doesn't undo/sort out any of that!

In some ways 'compensation' is derogatory. Someone else is decided how much you pain and hurt is worth and at the end of it all you have £5000 in your pocket but it hasn't actually taken the pain away or sorted out your neck!

Yes if you are out of pocket as a result then you should be reimbursed but the 'compensation' is pretty meaningless.

I love playing the Devil's Adovocate!

All You Need is a bit of seudo cream an he'll come up a treat:rasp: as for the car, like always bit of T-Cut problem solved no need for an insurance claim it'll be like new;)

Not sure how you worked out that Norwich Union have no interest in insuring young drivers. Norwich Union were cheaper by over 100 pounds for me for my first insurance quote and they offer one of the best discounts for Pass Plus, something which I think is generally only taken up by learners, the majority of whom are young people.

However, if the premium does go up by 40% I certainly couldn't afford to insure my car with them any longer.

I think you'll find that where Norwich Union goes, others will follow! Statistics say that younger/inexperienced drivers are more likely to crash than older/experienced drivers and that within both groups men are more likely to crash than women. The underwriters use the facts and figures to calculate the risk and price the policies accordingly!

just from personal experience. i insure my valver for £500 but norwich union wont even quote me. 24, no accidents.

perhaps theyre ok for very young drivers then

People claim to much,i had a crash in december 2005 30mph i rear ended some bint who decided she had almost missed her exit on the motorway, my car needed a bonnet bumper and 1 headlight cost me £300 all in inc painting, they claimed everything they could (4 of them) the whole claim cost my insurance company £21k ! although their car was written off

This is 100% the problem! When I crashed my LCR Elephant sent a claims investigator out and he said that it's down to all the ancillary claims. In the past insurance companies used to replace/repair the metal and that was that.

"There's around a million uninsured drivers on the road, and all of us pay £30 on our premiums to cover those."

where does thta 30 quid go then?

NU are not alone, Motor premiums have to rise. We are currently in a very "soft" insurance market, premiums have been dropping and dropping for several months - like Churchill etc guarnateing to beat any renewal figure. Prices cannot continue at the level they are now, with the insurers having any hope of making money.

The figures that NU band about are probably abit of a guestimate tbh, I would suspect by issuing press releases like that they are hoping to get the market in general to increase premiums.

And before you all start that insurers are making millions of £££, they are. But not through motor insurance, nearly all major motor insurers make a loss on motor insurance, a profit which the make back on other much more profitable insurances like home/life/heath etc.

As for paying for other peoples accidents, that is exactly what you are doing - thats how insurance works!! If it didn't work like this, if one day you have a claim - and you probably will at some point and the claim payout is £10k, then your premium next year would be £10k+. Not a good place to be.

Young driver premiums will continue to be stupid until we start to realise that we are not teaching people how to drive properly. And until we do something about it, young drivers will continue to crash, cost insurance companies lots, and lots of money, and premiums will continue to reflect this. IMO insurers should start to place more weight on advanced driver training. I would have personally been more than happy to spend £500-600 on advance driver training, if I received a worhtwhile insurance discount as a young driver - and therefore being able to insurer a quicker car for less money. But apart from the Pass Plus, there are no real recognised driving training options out there.

The Police are getting tougher on drivers without insurance, there's now a massive database up and running where the plod can check the insurance on a car on their computer from the comfort of their T5. But IMO the fines are still too low, they fine should be a minimum of the premium which you avoided paying. A £350 fine is no deterent if your premium should have been £1000.

Oh, and the £30 from everyones premium goes to fund the Motor Insurers Bureau (yes, they all wear black suits). So if your walking along and hit by an uninsured driver and cannot work for 6 months, you can make a claim against the MIB "pot" to which we all contribute. See: www.mib.org.uk

Just insured my new valver. am 18 have been driving a year and my lowest quote was £2400.

The car only cost me £450!

Apparently also my quote was also bumped up because the car is black?!

Whats that all about?!

s**t - I renew my policy on the day I go back to Uni, and am being very tight in order to afford what I think it'll be.

If it goes up I'm screwed!
