FAO anyone who's powder coated engine bits

The rocker and cam covers are off at the moment, so i'm going to get them PC. Is there any precautions with the rocker cover? ie. The piece that attaches on top of the rocker (not sure of the name, but it's where the breather bit is at the back ), with the red gasket on it, would this be ok to be left on while powder coating? Or should I attach the piece back to the rocker and have it done as one unit?

Any bits that should NOT be covered?

Separate the parts (cover and oil breather plate). Mask off the internal / through to internal holes on both parts, all threads etc. Sack off the read gasket and reseal with a high grade silicon.

powder coating the rocker cover should be approached with care. Due to it's being a precision machined part you may be compromising bearing clearances, and machined flat surfaces by exposing the metal to the kind of heat involved in powder coating. Flat metal parts such as this can twist easily.

A decent paint job would be a better option in this case

Is that something that's been known to happen danny? Surely the amount of bolts which hold the rocker down would be sufficient to "mold" it back to straight?

I wouldn't be concerned, PCing is only usually at about 150 deg. It will be in the cooling (eg sling it in a bucket of cold water) were deformation could occur, if at all. Painting however is a good alternative suggestion.

having to rely on tightening the bolts down to get it flat increses the risk of cracking. I've had to fit a number of powder coated rocker covers on other engines (most notably F7R's) and they can be a b**ch to seal due to twisting

That was my thought although the rocker does seem a little flimsy. I doubt they throw it in water afterwards though
