FAO Guy S: DS2500 Fitting

  Clio 197
Hiya Guy,

There are two ways:

1) Al-Fredo style, and remove the metal clips

2) Grinding off approx 1mm of the metal backing plate (bit by bit), until they slot in.

great stuff cheers..

so its off the END off the backing plate and not the rear of the backing plate

did you fit the pads in the way the guide shows (the one thats a sticky on this forum?)

  Clio 197
(never looked at it) but there's only one way to do it really.

I can do them in no time (I've done it twice now)... the time consuming bits are: Cleaning / Grinding.

You're not doing rear pads are you? (a little fiddly).

no just the fronts. im hoping the back ones are fien as they dont really do much work anyway.

its just my brakes lately have been very scary.. foot planted to the floor and its hardly stopped, not even been able to get the ABS to kick in in the wet.

yet at other times the brakes are really sharp.

Apart from the Renault pads, every other type of pad i've used doesn't fit with the metal clip / shim things attached unless you grind some off the pad because they are designed to fit the caliper.

I just remove the metal shims and jobs a goodun' personally. As far as I know they are there to reduce brake squeal, but as long as you used copper grease this shouldn't be a problem.

You might need some brake fluid too... bleeding the system might help, and you might as well do it if you've got the wheels off.

Buy an EZbleed from halfords (£10 or below), and some CastrolSuperdot4 fluid... (£10 each).

Or Silkolene pro race 2000 if you do track days..

already got one of them ez bleed kits with the non return valve in. cant be arsed to bleed them yet though, i'll see how it goes with just the pads.

im off work all week anyway so will give me something to do. lol

where do you jack your car up? as them jacking points under the sill usually bend and then the paint cracks off them and they then look aweful on side view.

There's a flat/hard part of the chassis, about 6 inches form the sills, which goes along the car.

(don't know what it's called)

You can jack the car up from there (as close to the engine as possible).

I use double-folded cardboard between the jack and the chassis, so as not to disturb the anti-corrosion coating.

just did a search and that seems to be the preferred place, found a piccie in one thread too.

was planning on using a small block of wood between the jack and the car as the top of my trolly jack is like a crown type of shape so would definately mark it.

or does the cardboard work fine?

Oms - you should apply for a job at Haynes - you know the ones that do the manuals...!

but then he'll have to make out you just need to 'simply insert the pads into the carrier' when you really need to grind chunks off it. :clown:

A soft wood would be better... 4x4 inches

or four layers of cardboard! (the jack's teeth can poke though if the cardboard's too thin).

I've jacked-it up before with no cardboard... and I had to re-seal the body with a spray.

Hehe! Well... let's not forget the first time I tried to change my pads:

Remember a thread: "help help help help help help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Lol!

(not to mention the 2litres of brake fluid on my driveway)

The jacking kit could come with a wee hook, which works well..

You could even cover the end with insulating tape for extra protection.

the kit in the boot? strapped to the drivers side?

only ever seen jack handle and towing eye in there?!

  Clio 197
Yup.. they're there for you to replace the original nuts that you take-off when changing the pads.

Due to the fact that they're esentially behind the wheel - they get hot/cold and are exposed to salt and the elements - so they can corrode over time.

The new ones have got thread-lock at the ends, which will help them stay-in (and you DO want them to stay-in, lol).

I've not used mine - originals are still in good cond.

yeah my originals are still fine.. its only a year and half old. lol

so didnt bother using them

all fitted now.. how long am i meant to take it easy on the brakes for??

Get to a motorway / fast A road.

Slow down from 60 to 50, then 60 to 40 ,then 60 to 30 etc.... getting harder each time.

You need to get them pretty damn hot before they bed-in and bite properly.

  not a clio anymore
GuyS, did you grind them in the end?
Haver never grinded pads, that sound scary!

got wheel off, old pads out, went to get grinder.. erm.. where is it??

so had to use a drill with these like grinding type wheel on.

wasnt too bad but took ages. lots of trying then shaving a bit more off.. you practically have to take the 'ridges' off the end, just leaving a slight ridge there.

just been out on a 10mile or so run using brakes. gradually getting harder with them

seem to be working well. if i push them too hard though theres like a juddery grinding.. guessing thats the ABS? never had a car with ABS before. lol

thought the ABS light woud light up when the ABS is activated? like the ESP light lights up when ya go sliding sideways round a corner.
