Hello...

Right i finally bit the bullet and got round to colour coding my side strips. Never done anything like it before so im a bit of a noob. been using FM's guide to help me along.

Decided to start doing the back bits first as there smaller and easier to rectify.

Currently on the priming stage ATM but need some advice. Here are picks of what i have done up to now :

Sanded and wet and dried:

Cleaned with soapy water and then primed:

What it ended up like:

This is the first stage priming so im going to leave them while tomorrow for the paint to key. the plastic feels really rough and not smooth so would i just need to wet and dry a couple of times tomorrow? here is the sandpaper i bought what grade would you use?

Sorry about the long read but i really wanna get this right first time as i love my pride and joy :approve: and help will be much apprechiated

ive done a set of wingmirror covers over the past few days.........started with wet&dry 80, right upto 1200........the texture on renault plastics is CRAP....took ages to sand the two covers down........when i got to wet&dry 800 it was getting proper smooth, then used 1000/1200 to finish......then primered and carried on...

it takes ALOT of sanding to get rid of the dimples properly...even if it feels smooth its probably not

so would you just carry on sanding with the fine paper, re prime, sand reprime then paint?

you need to work up through the grades, by the looks of it yours only goes up to 400, try and get hold of a broader range

Minimum grade to use for sanding down primer id say would be 800 grit, so yeah you need to buy more. I am a sprayer btw.

I took my side bullets off when i got bored after colour coding, sanded the 16v badge off, used some 400 grit to get rid of the texture a little.
Then gave 3 heavy coats of aerosol primer, allowed to dry and then wet sanded down with some 800 grit then painted - now completely smooth.
Don't worry if u rub a little of the primer off the edges of the strips while wet sanding it won't really matter long as u spray the colour on properly.

so wats the best procedue to get them as smooth as poss... just to work down the grades ??? because if you use thick coats of primer wont that make it smooth as well ?

back in your booth then... because a P400 dry sand is exactly the same as a P800 wetflat ;)

your P400 paper is fine for the primer although it is best to wetflat primer, id just use the P400 wet myself, will be fine

Thanks FM...

So tomorrow if i use the P400 to sand down the primer - re prime and paint it will still come out smooth?

  Chocolate Bar™
it will come out smoother definetely, but not 100% whether it will be perfectly smooth. ideally filler primer would be more beneficial as it slightly fills any imperfections.

middo - if this completely fails how easy is it to start again? would i just start form stage one on the finished product (which may be wrong) or would i just wet and dry the laquer of and work way through the grades of wet and dry?

tbh once the prep is done and you've got a smooth surface its not too hard to finish them off nicely.

feel free to PM us if you get stuck.

ive always finished With P320 dry or P800+ wet

P400 will be fine, just make sure it dont get clogged up and put any deep scratches in. ideally you want to wetflat it, it generally gives a better surface to spray and cuts down on all the excessive dust too.
