V6ing how does yours stay so clean and bright cause mild steel gathers surface rust very quickly........................there isnt anything wrong with it..........it just looks abit off and I havent seen one that is clean like yours.

Hi Stu, you can get a good deal of the road grime off by spraying through the grill onto the silencers with a good wheel cleaner (when the cars COLD! before I use it on a Sunday Morning for me) Let the cleaner soak in for a few minutes and u can see the crap melting off, then rinse it off with clean cold water.. then to dry it off u can reach under between the bumper and the box most of the way to wipe it dry and clean.. if u need to reach any further, wrap a bit of rag around a bit of wire, and u can reach up higher if needed. Takes less than 5 minutes.

Well worth doing once a week, to keep it mint...and sets the rear end off. It might be pretty stubborn if its got years of build up tho..so might take u a bit longer. Ive kept mine like this since I brought it as new. But ull still get a good result tho!

... and while were on the subject, can you get the plastic grilles out so you can get at the exhaust to clean it?

Mike, not sure about the mk2.. if they are removable or not? The mk1 is wire mesh.. and is bonded onto the bumper permanently. The mk2 might not be such a problem to worry about the silencers, as they are behind thick plastic grills.. and not as visible as the mk1.

I think Renault did this as mk1 owners complained about the silencers looking crap after a few months and spoiling the look for the rear end, as most owners cant be assed to clean the box. So it is now hidden a fair bit more. (shame, cos I think its one of the best features).

from what i knew it wasnt rust that affected the mk1 box so much, but internal baffles dying creating a boomy poping sound more than it should?

anyway, im going to do your wheel cleaner technique tomorrow v6ing, i must get it looking like that!!

sorry, for hyjacking this thread.. just answering these guys..

Iwantav6, I brought another rear bumper a few weeks ago, as I was going to customise it (still to do!) by removing the middle section on it..so the whole width of the mesh section is open and cutting out the bit the pipes stick thru.. (Tim did his ages ago, and looks good!). It would look like this (PHOTOSHOP)...

http://erc.qmuc.ac.uk/cliosport/gallery/full/1094844942__boxopen.jpg

But, what I was going to say is.. I checked to see how easy the rear bumper was to remove, and as far as I can see... theres something like 4 nuts to remove under the boot lid, and 2 more under the wheel arches each side!

Looks very easy to do over the weekend, so... if I was you.. and your box needs a pretty good going over.. Id recommend that u remove the rear bumper..then give it a dam good clean and polish so its like chrome! Then after this...and youve refitted the bumper, just clean as I said earlier.. as I think yours will be very hard to remove as its built up for a while.

I havent taken my bumper off mine yet, but it looks easy to do..u might need another person to support one end as u loosen the other tho.

Just an idea.. :) let me know how u get on?

Mike, I like ur idea!

What a few guys with un-polished silences might not realise, is that at night.. when u switch ur lights on... the rear registration light (middle of bumper) also lights underneath the bumper, which lights up the silencers! So when I go out at night..the rear silencers are lit up each side a bit (not extremely bright, but nicely lit from the top)

v6ing. im not sure i can be bothered to remove the bumper, although it is easy. ill remove the undertray, and clean it up, and see what i can do about the top half, if no go then the next time i may remove the bumper.

i like your pic idea, but i also love the standard look, so not sure if i would do it.

how much was hte rear bumper?

the front one is a fortune!

got a ph call from jaybee .. they have finished my clutch .. after 5 days!! which is bloody good news!! seeing though i was prepped for 10 days!!. picking it up tomorrow .. still got no fuel empty light or cruise .. thats back in on monday for that. but at least she is back ... for now anyway

Yep, give it a try and see how u go.. the rear bumper idea does look pretty good, but it doesnt look as good in that photoshop.. as Ive got a bigger rear roof spoiler now.. that u can see in the pic on page one of this thread. The larger roof spolier I brought from Dave Appleby, and also u can get the rear bumper from him as well!

From Renault they are £411 plus vat. So hell save u about half that!

GREAT NEWS VEE6!! Know how u must feel.. being without your car for just a few days is a nightmare!

Heres a pic of my exhaust

D:\Documents and Settings\Richard\My Documents\My Pictures\24910-2.jpg

Youll see that its slightly shorter and the pipes are slightly bigger.................thats because its a sports exhaust..................Reno supplied and fitted...................it was an option on the Mk1.

Youll have to cut & paste to see it.......................hope it works.
