fault spax rear RSX coilover - please read

  172 cup track toy
Follow up to my previous post reagrding my knocking rear shock that has only covered less then 500 miles from new!!

Phoned spax to report the fault and they confirmed they had a 2 year warranty, But they were unable to do any thing for me as i did not purchase the shock new (i bought the car and the previous owner had just purchased them)

I asked if it would be possible for me to send the unit back to them for rebuild and i would pay even though it was nearly new & faulty, after giving them the part number i was told they can not be rebuilt and i would have to buy a new unit.

I ordered a new unit yesterday which has been deliered today, opened the box to find the unit is differnt to the one fitted to my car, so i phoned them back to report this, i was told to take pics and send them in but within a few minuites i have a phone call back to say they had changed the design of the rear units as there was a fault with the old design, the new design must be fitted without the helper springs i was told! and the design is different to the old type. i asked if there was any chance of me having an older style sent out to me but theye no longer do these because of the fault!!

Im now told by Spax i need to replace both coilover in a pair because they have changed the design due to a fault on the old ones, Im mega unhappy at this as i know i didnt by them new but they have a 2 years warranty, they are only a few 100 miles old and im bing told the design has been changed because there was a problem but it expected to pay for 2 new shocks!! not only that but ive just had the car back from BTM where is been fully cornor weighted ready for my first track day on the 30th of this month! I find this very unfair of Spax! So the only thing i can now do is buy 2 new shocks, have them fitted then back for cornor weighting again!! just more ££££££££,s to be spent

The part number on my rear RSX coilovers is GRO89 4MS this is the units with a problem

The part number of the new revised unit send was GR089 3NL

So may be worth checking you rear Coilover part numbers and see which ones have been fitted

I'll re corner weight it £FOC mate as its only the rears, technically we shouldn't have to touch the fronts so won't take long, i hate when companies do s**t like this, boils my piss!

Do the revised units look any different to the older ones? I need to check my part numbers but I do have helper springs installed so should take them out by the sound of it if I do have the newer ones... sigh.

Woah chill out buddy! :p

I had exactly the same problem.

Bought a new unit, saw it was different but fitted it anyway. They sit exactly the same apart from the little purple spring at the top, now they come with a black cone shaped bit of metal instead.

Haven't had any problems doing this and they've been on about 3 weeks now.

Going to send the damaged unit to spax to see if they can repair/replace it. (with a new style one hopefully lol).

This is whats anoyed me as they know they have a problem they even said themselves theyve had problems with the older style hence changing the design but still they wont cover them under warranty and say i have to buy a new pair, its not only the cost & the messing about but ive just had it set up properly with fred, that alone tuck me 6 hours to drop off car & re collect, im self employed & work 7 days a week as it is so dont get much time! Spax definetly havent got the best after sales service!

Hear it all the time on here just lately, the only people clio spax are good for is the people who manage to make enormous margins knocking them out to mug punters at the massively inflated full retail price.

Such a shame because people are paying in some cases within a couple of hundred qui of KW money for this litter :(

OP, you could just buy cup rear shocks and some suitable rear springs and just use the fronts you have, its not essential to hae the same make front and rear, especially when lets face it that make isnt upto much.

Spax are all about making money, don't seem interested in any bad press they receive as long as they make money in my opinion

Spax customer service seems s**t.

I bought the 'road' variant and haven't had any issues at all. I dread anything happening that necessitates contacting them, their service seems disgusting.

To be fair unless you've got proof of purchase, they have no need to offer you a replacement.
For all they know you could've just found them and are trying to swindle a new pair.

Unless the previous owner gave you the receipt for them? Then couldn't you just pretend to be him and say you've changed address?

It does seem to be a lottery on documented fitment though (I.e the people we know who have fitted them, not including people who have them who aren't on the forums) some people have had them with no issues like yourself, other have had loads of issues.

That's the issue isn't it, 1 person who has them no issues, might recommend 2/3 people. 1 bad case and everyone is told. But then, it does also raise awareness to potential issues. Then it can also be hypochondriacal effect too...

Buy 2 new rears, then talk to the lad you bought the car from, send him the faulty ones and get him to chase for a full refund, split the money or something

Piss poor customer service

Good to hear mate, fingers crossed it stays like that and you dont have to enter into dealing with their customer service, assuming it happens before they go bankrupt yet again and dissapear owing a load of money.

I think that those sort of lies just sum up the sort of contempt that Spax hold the punters in, I would have more respect for them despite the poor product if they at least had the decency to be honest to people!

All they want to do it seems is take your cash, then fob you off till they next go into administration after the directors have rinsed the company for a load of money.

And then when they startup again the same unscrupulous retailers who are flogging their rubbish now will do so again because Spax pay them so handsomely to do so, because they can afford to as they are selling a cheap product for almost proper suspension money.
