Faulty speedo

Hey guy's, Iv a 2001 Phase I 172; My speedo is acting up a bit; It sometimes doesn't work whatsoever and then sometimes it might jump back into life again. I was told it was more then likely the speedo drive gear that was knackered but after removing the tripod sun wheel on the box it seems fine - all the teeth are fine and she's turning with ease. Iv also changed the speedo sensor and still did no good whatsoever. Any idea's as to what it could be?
Thanks guy's, Chris.

Check the pins in the speedo transducer connector havnt been damaged or pushed out.

is that the end of the cable that goes on the speedo sensor???

and here is a pic of what i thought was broken in the gearbox but its fine
