Ditto. Just say it's got red ring they will prob send you a refurb. But a refurb better than having to sell it and buy a whole new one.

As long as you didn't mank the seal should be alright. I've sent off 2 that I opened and both times sent back a refurb. Both were DVD drives going but said they were red ring.

I would say there is a risk of getting banned if you do replace the drive yourself. In the ban wave nobody found a definitive reason why they got banned and a different dvd drive could be a problem. I wouldn't risk it, just send it off at least then you've got protection if something goes wrong in the future

That's what you have to do for it to work. But like I said. Any tampering is risky if you want to avoid a ban

Spoofing (changing the dvd drive MFR and making it report as the original drive) is easily detectable using vendor specific commands.

Use that to identify your drive (or look at it as you've already opened it)
If you want to protect Live, get the same MFR of drive, open the drive and swap the pcb's ...
At worse you'll have to solder 6 wires if its a LiteOn.
This will mean the FW never changes and you cant be banned.
Alternatively, buy a laser for your drive (if you tell me MFR, Ill tell you model numbers)
If you need a spare drive, I've a mate that stocks them.

Its a benq VAD6038 drive. Went out today and bought a new 360, got a good deal from argos, Arcade console, Forza3, In the movies with the camera, and Scene it with all the controllers for 129.99. I thought this was a blinding deal as all three games are like 30 quid each.
Still gonna repair the elite. If i only use it on live for Sky player would they still ban the account?
