  Clio_Smart
As per title...

Hey guys i need help.

I have a eee pc 900 and it has linux but im fed up with linux as the webcam it comes with doesnt work with the messenger linux provides.

There are ways around it but seems to complicated for me to do.

So i was wondering has anyone installed xp on a eee pc with linux ?

If so help would be great :D

I have googled it and tried but im having no joy.

Im doing what they say but it says error etc

Im fed up lol

I did it with my 701, was easy to be honest... took about 20 minutes :)

You just need a copy of XP, a memory stick (1gig minimum), and download Nlite for free (google it).

How far you getting with it?

Well i type the codes into the terminals that they say on the eee forum but at the last one i have no joy.

I need to update something and i try to do that but it doesnt work.

But i would like windows aswell so im going to for xp anyway.

Did it slow your asus down at all by installing xp ?

Just need to locate an xp disc now.

I think you can buy xp quiet cheap now, correct me if im wrong lol

The xandros that comes with the EEEpc is for babies.. install a real distro, xubuntu is good.

And yes, XP will slow it down a lot ! kiss your 5 second boot goodbye ;)

Got to admit now that I worked out why my laptop was running like s**t on ubuntu and have fixed it, its all I use. I have re-installed windows so I can boot it when I need to as I have some software that I havent sourced linux versions of yet, but Ubuntu is just better.

Does anyone know how to install amsn on the eee pc ?

Otherwise its xp.

Is there any downfalls with installing xp ?

Thanks :D

I just want to be able to work the webcam with messenger and amsn works with linux but i cant seem to install it.

ctrl+alt+t to open a terminal

then follow this to install amsn

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/how_to_install_amsn_0.97

Now you need to enable the camera to use it with amsn..

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:controlcamera#the_easy_way

now you can enable/disable the camera by clicking an icon, and launch amsn.

Easy peasy...

I try to install amsn via the terminal but it will not allow me to update.
"Temp failure resolving "updates.xepc.org"
Failed to fetch update
Couldnt stat source package
You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems.
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored or old ones used instead.

Where do i go from here ?

the website is down.. just google and find an alternative.. plenty out there.

mate it takes 16 seconds for XP to boot and runs spot on... and thats on my 701

By the time you Nlite it, it gets XP down to about 200 meg, by getting rid of loads of crap you just dont need (keyboard languages etc etc)... in fact... I heard it takes up less space than Linux

Once you Nlite it, just make a bootable USB pen, and it installs off that... or even easier... get an external CD drive.

XP is miles better than Linux and it runs mint on my 701 so shouldnt be a problem with yours.

I have Photoshop, Flash, Media Player, MSN and a few other apps all working with no issues on mine

If you need a hand, PM me and ill see if I can help

takes 5 seconds in linux. And just because XP looks like its booted doesnt mean it has, XP can continue booting background stuff for up to 15 minutes after you see the desktop.

You can put a flavour of linux on a floppy disk eg. Less than 1.44mb. Your probably counting all the hundreds of free applications you can install (if you want). You really need to know what your talking about before making bold statements like that.

XP is miles better than Linux

In your opinion.

XP is far more user friendly for the average person

KDF only loves Linux because he is a geek and can exploit it
