Few questions regarding wheel bearings.

  Tango'd PB 1.2 16V
Erm, i've kinda come to the conclusion the awful droning noise i can hear when driving above 50 is a wheel bearing problem.
Done a bit of research into it and apparently its one of the symptoms.

So here i am:

1. What happens if i don't get it fixed sharpish?
2. How much is it to fix?
3. How do i know which wheel bearing it is?
4. Anyone local wanna help a brother out?

Cheers,
D.

1.- bearing might collapse, you dont want that really.

2.- bearing itself should be some 30 quid, not really a diy job unles you can press out the old bearing out.

3.- Front bearings hardly ever go. Rear bearings do go. In order to know which bearing, build up enough speed to get the drone going. Then turn right and left. When you hear the drone stop, then the offending bearing is in the opposite direction. Say you turn right and the droning stops, then its the left bearing. You could aslo lift the car on axle stands and turn the wheels by hand. The offending bearing should be obvious.

you mixed something up in your example: if you turn right and the noise stops, it is the right bearing. this is due to dynamic weight distribution to the outside wheels. If you own a 1*2 or a non sport with rear discs, just change the discs including the bearing. preassembled discs might be cheaper than swapping bearings over.
