Fifth Gear reminder

Im sure youve all set the videos anyway, but dont forget the 182 v CTR showdown is on Fifth Gear (Ch 5) tonight at 8.30pm.

Wouldnt normally get drawn into this normally, but I stopped to let an arrogant CTR driver by on a busy road at lunch....not so much as a wink by way of a thank you (one of my pet hates!).

Im getting worried.....Ive been discussing/arguing which will win with my work mates for the whole day. Being a 182 driver you know who ill be supporting.....but can the 182 actually beat its arch enemy the Type-r ?!

yeah, it is pretty crap, especially compared to Top Gear! but its got to be worth watching for this test!

they always side with the ctr because of its image. they will say the ctr is faster in a straight line even though its 200kgs heavier and only has 15hp more but less torque than 182. and actually even less power to weight compared with the 182cup.

also list price well we all know the 182 can be picked up for 11k ! not 16k i avent seen any CTRs cheap new so there is a 5k price difference nearly 50% more than you can get a 182cup for.

The laptimes are bullsh1t though and their website doesnt take account of the weather.

At least I can only assume it was the weather that allowed a Ford Sport Ka to beat a VRS and a C2 GT to get within half a second of an LCR.

Dont be so sure. The problem is whilst Tiff is a racing driver he is also a journalist. On top of that I am not convinced that he would be able to fully exploit an FWD more than any other racing driver come journalist.

The dangers of journalists testing cars on the track is that their bias could come through and affect their driving.

E.g. Clarkson drove the new Golf GTI and proclaimed it to be just about the best hot hatch ever. The stig then took the GTI around against a few other hot hatches if I remember correctly and the GTI got a complete pasting. Now had Clarkson been doing the driving do you think that would have happened?

I guess this is where the faceless stig concept comes into its own.

I could well imagine there being a second or so in it...

Well, the Leon Cupra R lapped the same day/track as the CTR on fifth gear and was 1.1 seconds slower than the CTR.

You think a 182 Cup cant outlap the vanilla flavoured Cupra R?

Tiff does love the Type-R and will definitely favour it more than the 182 Cup, particularly since the 182 Cup comes without all the decent stuff.

Tiff knocked the 172Cup a few years back cause it didnt have aircon and wouldnt try it against the Frs,Ctr or the Lcr.Would have beat all but the Frs l guess!

This is where journalistic bias comes in. I have never heard the CTR being knocked for only having AC as a £1k extra.

Funnily enough I havent heard the lack of leather seats knocked either whereas a Cup would almost certainly be marked down for that.

I like the CTR a lot although having driven one I will be interested to see what if anything Tiff says about the steering. Even the most avid of CTR fans would concede that this its weakness but its unlikely to get a mention tonight. Of course that lack of feel does not really manifest itself on the track where you can easily predict what is coming next. It is felt more on B roads which is probably why judging cars purely on laptimes is just as flawed as 0-60 figures.

i remember reading or seeing a reveiw tiff had done about the 182 vs focus rs and the clio came out on top. the 0-60 of the clio was also quicker than the focus rs iirc. so the182 should have tiffs surport.
