First day at school...

  Silver Clio 172 Cup
Quick post to say hello - I've just bought a 53 plate 172 Cup (silver) and I'm new on here.

I'll be tracking my Cup a fair bit (probably Rockingham, Donington, Anglesey etc, trip to the Ring next Spring) and I'm looking for recommendations for track use. Any comments on the following?

1. I've heard the standard pads turn to cheese under heavy use, so I was going to stick some Ferodo DS2500 or Mintex 1144 on front and rear. I'll probably stick with the standard discs but uprate the fluid.

2. I'll leave the suspension as standard because I need to use the car for work and don't want it any lower or firmer.

3. It's got plenty of poke until I improve my skills, but I guess when the time comes to upgrade I'll go for induction, exhaust and maybe a remap. Any recommendations here? No loud exhaust systems - it's got to be civilised! Does the standard 182 exhaust setup fit straight on? Is a decat worth the bother?

4. It's on Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's at the minute which are great but a bit expensive for chewing up on a track. Are Toyo Proxes or Yoko A539s any use on the Cup?

Sorry for the big list of questions in my first post! I want to keep it as standard and cheap as possible but need to know that it's going to be durable on track, so any other suggestions would be appreciated...

Thanks

Tom.

hey fella welcome to the club,

definatley go for a decat, but as for a quiet exhaust system im not sure lol

as for the rest im sure other people on here can advise you better.

where you from fella??

Stock on the back are fine if you need to chnage the rears then I'd possible be tempted to get DS2500s but stock ones are fine and cheap
DS2500's pads for the front are great.

182 exhaust doesn't fit as 182 have no rear tyre well the Exhaust sits ther you can make it fit if you have the 172 spare wheel well cut away but you'd want to get the 182m 4-2-1 manifold at the same time.

Decat is supposed to be usful but some people don't like them its preference it makes it a bit noiser.

The intake manifold work is the best idea value for money wise.

For cheap tyres I'd go down to 15's. You can pick up dynamic alloys cheaply and run the car on those. Also theres loads of used 15 inch slicks etc for sale cheaply.

For suspension I'd whack some Eibach Pro springs on, hardly lower the car at all and don't make the ride any harsher I've heard.

For track work I'd stick with the stock stuff or just upgrade the whole setup springs and dampers.

Thanks for the replies so far - I'll get some pics up as soon as I can figure out how...

Thanks for the 182 exhaust info - I thought there had to be a good reason why people didn't do that! Thanks for the pad info too - sounds like I might not have to spend too much after all....

Running 15" wheels and slicks is tempting and would be cheap but without a cage and/or baffled sump I'll stick with road tyres for now. I want the car to be an 'arrive and drive' job with minimal faffing when I get to the track, so the tyres need to be road legal as well. I might have a look for some 15s though - good idea.

I'll probably leave the decat etc until I've improved my driving!

I'm living in South Manchester at the mo but we're moving to the East Midlands pretty soon - any hints on decent servicing places etc would be handy.

After driving it for a few days I'm pretty impressed with the way you can either drive like a nun and get 46mpg or drive like a nutter and still get 33mpg...

33mpg and driving like a nutter? You and me have different views on nutter I'd get 33mpg when careful.
Yozzasport are about your best bet for cheap brake packages new disk lines and Ds2500's are £200 I think the pads alone are £85 or so which is cheap.
I've no idea on geography unfortunatly I'd guess GDI in Cambridge would be you closest dealership people on here use.

You can run slicks without a neeed to go mad on the engine its only massive prolongued coners you'd have problem but noone on here realy has the problem on UK tracks. The sump has some baffling anyway.

A silver Cup though is rare.

Ta Edde - I didn't realise that the sump had some baffling already.

As for 33mpg, I'm still getting used to driving at over 4,500 rpm wherever possible - my old engine would have detonated if I drove it like the clio! I'm sure I'll soon be down in the 20s and maybe even single figures on track...

I didn't know how rare the silver cups were until after I bought the car - something like 90 or so in the UK I think I read.

Does it have air con? If so then its even rarer again.

No aircon - shame in this weather but I'm looking forward to autumn so I don't have to think about that any more ...anyway, it's got windows.

This is the best I can do at the minute...the caravan in the background is not mine!
