fitting a new exhaust...

is fitting a new exhaust simple as takin off the old one a fixing on the new one
wots the best/easiest way to do it
i dont wanna pay to have it done
but dont wanna make a hash of it by trying it myself
advice appreciated

i don't know how the exhaust is configured on the model you have, so this is general advice.

take it off, working from the back to the front - may need penetrating oil; may also need to cut things off if they're seized.

refit from the front to the back. use new gaskets (and mounts, if required). don't torque everything up until you've got the complete system on and have adjusted it for fit - basically, make sure it's not too close to anything it might bang against and doesn't otherwise look out of place. then tighten all of the fittings.

may need to take it all apart again to use sealant on any problem joints, or if it's knocking anywhere.

after a couple of days use, nip up all of the fixings, as they'll have slackened with the heat cycles.

if it's an 01-04, the 01-04 Haynes manual details this and tells you that you need to saw to remove the backbox. libraries keep Haynes manuals.

Te rsi will need to back box cutting off as its a complete system from the cat back, the join at the cat is a donut shaped clamp, best to get a new one as you have to bend it to remove it.

You will still have to either cut the back box off or drop the rear beam to get the old system off.
Had a k-tec stealth on my last one and it was great, a little quiet however.

Yeh, unbolt to shocks and drop down the axle and slide the exhaust out as a whole.

I took a hacksaw to mine, try make the cut neat incase you wish to sell/refit. You would not need to drop the beam with an aftermarket cat back(usually) as it comes in 2 parts.

Cat back is everything from the catalytic converter back, so a middle pipe(centre section) and backbox.

K-tecs start at £230 full stainless steel, or you can get sportex/ashley systems on ebay for £150ish but they are mild steel.

Think im gnna buy a new centre section to replace mine? Would I also need to buy a new backbox? could i not just use mine and hacksaw it off and then clamp it back?

The hardest thing to do you'll find is undoing the two bolts that hold the centre section to the cat (unless it's been removed recently).

Once they're off you're laughing.

I had that problem lol.

I used an angle grinder and cut them off, if you do cut them off, make sure you have replacement bolts.

it's not actually as exciting as everyone makes it sound.

if you really want to do it yourself, read Haynes and have a go.

a cheap grinder with a cutting disc will make it a lot easier - they're about £20 in B&Q/etc

Just a question... quite stupid/silly really but ill ask anyway! After I hacksaw/grind off the backbox so i can remove the center section... what do i use to reattach it to the new center section? Do i need to get it welded?


Also... just had a crazy thought....

Cant i just jack up the car, drop the rear beam and remove my full exhaust (cat-backwards) and rattle/smash out the loose baffles? That way i wouldnt need to piss about with cutting anything or buying a new mid section and it would be a fix for the rattly noise until i save up for an aftermarket system?

Implications of this? started another thread on if i should just take it to an exhaust place for them to fit a straight through instead of my center section? but again.. want to know what difference to the car/emissions/noise both options will make.

If I was you I would get a K-Tec Recessed Exhaust and get a local garage to fit it, that's what I'm doing, tomorrow morning to be exact.

They quoted me £40-£50 which includes cutting of the rear bumper and colour coding the exhaust surround supplied by K-Tec.
