FL5 Civic Type R incoming - my predictions on video

I'm a massive fan of the FK8 Type R, but I've long hated its fake grilles and vents. The new FL5 car could very well put those design wrongs to right - while adding loads to the CTR performance base. I've made this quick video to summarise a few things to expect before the covers come off tomorrow... :)

Not that keen. Will be interesting to see what the Japanese tuners do with it.
Looks like a Kia Stinger from the back. Inside looks nice and modern though.

It's not bad, but it's so long, looks more like a 3-series now. Slightly prefer the older one I think.

I quite like it tbh.

Its almost a bit more like a Integra than what I would consider a 'Civic'. Then again, the newer gen civics have all turned from hatches into mini saloons which I always found a bit odd.

It's much better than the overly styled previous one, but it looks nothing like a hatchback. Hot coupe maybe? Will probably be a good touring car.

Has a lot going for it and I appreciate the Fwd hill that they are sticking too!

So much better looking now, the interior looks to be a massive step up. Love the old school red carpets. You can finally have an individual mode for the settings as well so you're not locked into sporty engine and suspension.

I've now met the car in person, for a follow-up video. Here's my social post of it.

Vid to follow on YouTube next week!

I get really nerdy with it and talk gear linkage feel, camber and seating position, so feel free to sub to the channel to see it when it goes out ;)

Asked my dealer to let me know when I could test drive one of these back in summer, they said they should have a demo by the end of the year.

Today I got this email, so no demos and pretty much no stock, I guess as to be expected since they'll sell them all no problem:

Honda have released more info on the Civic Type R (yesterday on my day off!) Each Honda dealer are allowed to sell one car, due to the limited numbers we will not get a demonstrator. Once a car is ordered it cannot be changed. Please let me know if you have any questions?

Over 50k with the options isn't it? And will only be sold in tiny numbers.

What a shame. The hot hatch market is getting a bit depressing now. This segment is getting to be mega expensive, and Ford are quitting it with the death of the Focus. Renault and Vauxhall have already gone. By next year, the segment below will pretty much just be the i20 N.

It feels like the end of an era.

No options I don't think, except colour.

It really is sad that hot hatches have been killed off, I could never get excited about the i20 either.

Isn't there a Carbon Pack and an Illumination Pack? Not exactly sure what the latter includes.

What a world we live in were hot hatches are just on 50k, jesus wept.
The last few years with the chip shortage, covid and now inflation has really messed up the final few years of ICE it feels. I bet if released 3 years ago this car would be mid 30s at most, in 2018 a Megane 280 was sub £30k.

Overpriced IMO.

Each dealer is only allocated 1 car as part of the first wave too. Second wave is June and I can’t see dealers getting more than 2-3 cars.

The numbers are pretty outrageous but expected. The FL5 is roughly 15k more than the FK8 was at release. A car that shares the same engine.

£46k OTR and £55k financed. Here are the alternatives;

BMW 340i Estate

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifgolio

Audi RS3 Sportback

Merc Amg45

BMW M2 Competition

yes, these are all second hand. But the joy of the old Civic Type R was it punched well above it’s worth. Not so here. All of the above are better cars and at the same price / cheaper…. IMO.

I thought it would be nearer £38k,
£47k for a Civic is mental, did they keep the price quiet from the press so they went mental for it saying it'll be a giant killer, not knowing what it's opposition will be ?

My Daughter said, they also have been allocated 0ne new type R, but are trying for more. As we all know, it is not as flashy as the old car, but a great car in its own right.

Good news - I've just received an invite to the UK launch of this car at Thruxton in January. So watch this space for when we produce our video, hopefully before the end of that month (embargo tbc).

I'm praying the cold snap lifts by then because lairy CTR vs wintry cold at Thruxton is 'bring-spare-trousers' territory.

As promised! We're the first title to publish a video review in Britain, so I'm pretty chuffed with the turnaround - we filmed on Tuesday. Sod's law said it would be the rainiest day of the week. Anyway, the FL5 is MEGA.

After thinking they look odd from the rear initially, this pic has changed my mind....

I think that looks great!
