2009 Volkswagen Scirocco GT

Car of the Day 10.9.2009

This ‘grass is greener on the other side” proposition will have many an American V-Dub fan up in arms because the wicked-hot Scirocco GT will not be available in the States. The car is simply irresistible with its turbo-enhanced, highly refined 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder rated at 197 horsepower and 207 lbs-ft of torque, a dramatically chiseled shape, big ole alloy wheels and Euro chic interior. It’s as if VW took a Golf GTI Mk6 (available in North America) and chipped away the bland body lines to reveal the car’s true aggressive soul embodied in the Scirocco GT.

The GT line offers three TSI engines and a turbo diesel and as expected the FM3 car sports the top-of-the-line bullet which translates into a big upside for tuners who can add turbo upgrades, cams and the like. Big payoffs also lurk in the suspension department where FM3’s deep tuning garage can really wake up the Scirocco GT’s sport tuned suspension that has evolved from many generations of GTI.

I'm playing the demo more than i'm playing fifa 10. addiction has set in at an early stage!

quick question... manual or auto?

Nothing I didn't already know butter ;)

It's actually quicker with all the aids off btw so all of you who are using them are slowing yourselves down. The only thing you're gaining is a safety net when on the limit.

i dont think theres much difference between auto and manual my self

I do, auto is in the wrong gear 50 + % of the time!

but you look at the leaderboards i used auto and im about 8 tenths of a second off the fastest i think last time i looked and i do an average lap time of 1.500 so i think in a full on race there wont be much in it. but the only way to find out will be on live;)

There is a huge difference, you should try it and with all assists/ aids off too. I find you can set yourself up better into corners as well with manual and everything off. Have always played that way and with cockpit view too.

i have tryed manual best i got was a 103.5. i find blipping the brake a few times before the corner lets you knock it down to any gear you want. i dont use any other aids and c**kpit view is a must

Live and hotlapping is a different discipline IMO. I'm not bad (top 1% of the leaderboards despite putting an hour tops into the demo in a couple of 15 minute sessions) but I'm not at the sharp end. That said when the CS lot race online I'm as quick sometimes quicker (based on fastest laps/position when crossing the finish line) as some of the guys on here who hotlap a margin faster than me.

The problem I find with auto is it short shifts when it should be holding onto the revs more. It always feels the car isnt allowed to move freely and turn in how I'd like as it's being limited by the comparable speeds of the driveshafts from side to side as a result of the diff/gear ratio.

I know this has been probably asked a hundred times, but is it really worth getting a wheel and pedals for this. I do pretty good on driving games with the pad so wondered if it was gonna make a difference, plus i can just sit back on the settee and chill with the pad, im thinking with the wheel and pedals i would either need a proper chair or sit bolt upright on the settee.

opinions invited.

It's supposedly been improved for wheel use this time round. I have a logitec wheel that I used a couple of times and sacked off because I found 300 degrees of rotation frustrating. Once the deadzone was dialed in there wasnt much travel to play with so it was easy to end up in a tank slapper or over correct. I'm going to bust it out again on the demo at some point and decide based on that if I can justify putting the fanatec on the credit card seeing as it works on PS3 xbox and PC.

Let me know what you think mate, if you think its worth getting a wheel after trying it then i think i will too.

That last picture was surely not done using only paint mode? There must be a way of uploading photos! Thats ridiculously life like!

@ Chris just read this about photomode, might cheer you up a bit ;)

It's referring to the shot of the exige.

Thanks Adrian. In regard to this shot:
It was taken from 324 feet away with a 20x zoom directly into the sunlight. All the white at the bottom is over-exposed sand in the runoff area at the outside of turn 1 at Suzuka. At first it was just a black car with an orange outline. The side that we're looking at was almost completely featureless because of the shadows and the back lighting.
I just wanted to bring out the silhouette, and I kept pumping the values and was expecting that messed up blue tinge we usually get. The blue never showed up. This is what happened instead.
That's the lake on the inside of turn 1 in the background.
The aperture and focus is SO much more refined allowing some really pinpoint depth of field photography. Oh, and you're not going to believe the new wheels, OMG!
One of the coolest things is that the camera remembers your previous settings so you can drive up the track a little bit, and you don't have to reset all you sliders for brightness, contrast, etc.
Oh, it also goes from race to Photomode in about 10 seconds now. Talk about SERIOUS opitimization! What's FM2 take... 2 minutes?
