Friend no longer has iphone, but still sends as imessage

My friend recently got rid of his iPhone, I text him quite allot. But now my iPhone still thinks he has iMessage, so it send the message, 5 minutes later it says sent as text message.

I've tried deleting him and the conversation and adding a new contact but it doesn't do anything! His number seems to be stored on the apple servers.

Any ideas?
