Front brake squeal (182)

  Clio 182
So my front brakes have been squealing a lot when slowing gently after fitting new pads. I fitted brembo drilled discs (can't remember the exact model number) a few weeks ago which I used with the stock pads for a while as ktec sent me the wrong pads!

Anyway, there was no squeal when using the stock pads, but now I have replaced them with EBC ultimax pads they are squeaking like there's no tomorrow. It's not so much from high speeds but when you get to 20mph or so and continue braking they start to squeal louder and louder until you stop.

I put copper grease on the back of the pads when they were first applied, and again this morning after taking off the wheels and having a clean around the area.

Any ideas why they are squeaking so much?

Thanks.

Different material than stock pads probably hence the noise

Ultimax are oe replacements so shouldn't squeal.. they usually come with shims did you fit them?

There were no shims in the box I got, literally just the pads themselves.
Mine have been similar.

I uprated to megane brembos and mintex pads. f**king horrendous squealing.

Get them bedded in correctly and really get them properly hot. Then just road miles. Mine sorted themselves out after about 500 miles

It's awful isn't it! I've given it a couple of good runs to try and warm the brakes up and bed them in properly. I'm going to leave them for a couple more weeks and if it persists I'll just change pads.

Do the ultimax pads have a red "brake in" layer? ebc yellows with that layer squeel usually until thats gone

Yeah they do, haven't actually taken them out to check how much they've worn down though.

I personally wouldn't call them an OE replacement even though EBC do. I've had mixed braking on them on cars over the years ; they are on my current car (a 1990 Mazda MX-5) and with new brake lines throughout a mate of mine still reckons the pedal feels very 'wooden'. In a Mondeo previously I couldn't lock up the brakes, where even the ABS could not cut in!

Anyway, rant over.

Did your pads move freely in the sliders. Do you still have the slider plates installed? If so, how clean are they and the surface underneath?

I no longer use copper grease on sliders or pads ; it congeals, and semi seizes things up, hence why the squealing can sometimes come back. Get your hands on some ceramic grease if you can :). On Pagid discs and Bosch pads I had zero brake squeal from the off, but it did take a surprising amount of time for the pads to bed in.
