Front suspension knocking - has anyone considered this?

there seem to be a few threads about people with knocking front suspension at the moment and i'm also trying to trace a knock on mine.

i've already renewed the top mounts and have been looking at the rest of it today - it all feels fine to me.

one thing i have spotted, though, concerns the track rod ends. they can obviously be twisted about the balljoint pin but there's very little travel side-to-side and they knock as you would expect them to whilst you twist them about like this.

due to the fact that there's so little travel, i'm wondering if this could be the cause of the knocking that some people suffer at either lock.

i've not seen this suggested on here before and am just wondering if anyone has else noticed and considered this - ?

thanks

hi there i had a real bad knock on right hand lock,iv changed gear box drive shafts and track rod ends to still find the knock, next was new bottom arms and ball joints..still no diff. now 2weeks ago i fitted new strut top mounts now not sure if this fixed it but while i was on doing this i noticed that the roll bar was further over to 1 side than the other, so i removed it fully cleaned it greased all 4 rubbers and put it back, done 1200 miles and not a noise,,,,

My 182 failed its Mot last week on a ball joint amongst other things, I got a pair from the motor factors for £10 each and the knocking problem is sorted.

every car on the road has track rod ends designed in the same way mate

they dont really move on that axis under use

i'd be surprised if they didn't; that's why the movement's there?

they seem to have very little range of movement compared with other TREs i've worked on - i was just wondering if this could be a possible cause of some of the knocking noises people report. perhaps not, but i've thought of a way of checking and will have a look at it tomorrow.

thanks, also, for the ARB suggestion:)

been having another look today. i don't now think that it can be TRE related (nod @ ditz); also replaced/greased all four ARB bushes but still have this 'cracking' noise at either lock.

i'm tiring of it now and think i'll revisit at a later date. it needs to go up on a ramp or over a pit really but the noise only shows itself on tarmac and not on smooth/loose surfaces.

anyway, thanks for the replies and sorry this turned out to be a red herring.

Now i have a fairly simular noise on half Right lock going round bends and 20 mph I get this knock underneath the steeting rack somewhere as soon as i straighten the wheel it goes. I have noticed some wishy washy steering lately too since this started. I have taken full advantage of my local Renault dealer offering a free health check on everything so hopefully they will shine some light if not....well havnt thought of a if not yet lol

i know this is an old thread but it popped up in a search i was doing...

for anyone interested the noise mentioned here sounds alot like inner antiroll bar bushes, been seeing it alot recently
