front suspension struts

someone I know needs to change a front coil spring on a renault kangoo, what we want to know is can you just whip the top nut off with an impact gun to remove the strut? Or is it essential to hold the centre with an allen key and use a spanner to undo the nut?

If it's anything like the back ones it'll probably just spin if you don't use the key. Not 100% though.

hmm impact wrenches don't tend to turn things though, like when you do a crank nut you don't have to lock the crank because the gun doesn't turn it

If you gun them with weight on them you can usually get them off no sweat.

i know the gun will get them off btw i just wondered weather it'll turn the bit in the middle aswell which isn't supposed to be turned?

Give the thread a spraying of easing oil and with the van standing on the ground use the impact gun.
