Full fat 'toys'



PMSL at folk who think they can stop quicker in an emergancy on the road in the wet with no ABS than people with ABS because they believe they are better drivers.

i would say that 90% of road accidents happen quickly with no prior warning, or they would'nt result in an accident :rolleyes:
The argument that a car must be dangerous because it doesn't have abs is a joke. Anyone who just slams on the brake pedal & hopes for the best (hoping that the abs will save them) is a wally & didn't ought to be on the road. That is not how your meant to drive at all.
Like i said in almost ten years on the road i've only ever had it kick in one (and that was on a side street covered in snow) Other than that i've never felt the need to rely on it.

Accidents happen mainly because folk do not adjust their driving to the conditions of the road & weather etc.

No, you're wrong!

They seem to happen quickly when in fact it is primarily down to the fact that the driver affected is not reading the road far enough ahead and planning for what is, or what could be happening or developing in front of them.

Someone pulling out of a side junction is a prime example - that always happens suddenly, right?

Do you ever change your speed or position when passing a side road on a 60mph NSL single carriageway road?
Do you cover the brake in anticipation of someone coming out?
Do you move out to straddle the centre line if it's safe to do so (regarding any oncoming traffic) giving you more time to react if someone did appear to be pulling out?
Do you look as far back along the side road to see if there's any hint that someone is approaching quickly and likely to pull out?
Is the vehicle waiting to pull out actually creeping forwards slowly?
Have you seen the driver waiting to pull out looking in your direction?
Does the car look like a beat up old f*** that the driver plainly doesn't care about suggesting they might pull out regardless of you approaching fast?
Do you consider the road surface/markings/drain covers and how they'll affect your ability to slow your vehicle?
Do you plan an escape route in the event that some muppet does pull out?

Or do you just plough on with not a care in the world thinking...I've got ABS me, I'll be alright.

I understand what you are saying and im am by no means classing a car with no ABS as dangerous. I just saying that from my personall experiance of being with my mate in his old 172 cup, tootling along 15-20mph in traffic in the wet in the middle of manchester, plenty of distance between us and the car in front under normal circumstances, he genlty applied the break due the the line of traffic slowing and unknown to us the wheels had locked and we were smoothly gliding along the tarmac as if on ice with no control or influence as to where or when the car was going to stop. We stopped inches from the rear bumper of the car in front, had ABS had been fitted to the car i feel this would not have been the case.

Everybody has to 'think ahead' and adapt their driving style to accomidate other road users but you cant hover your foot over the break passing every N/S turning in anticipation that someone might pull out, we cant predict that the person behind the car coming in the opposite direction isnt going to pull out and attempt to overtake forcing us to break heavily. Thats why car manufacturers spend millons developing ABS, Traction control, Stabitlity control, corner breaking in order to improve our chances of avoiding an accident so to say they are wasting their time is would be nieve to say the least.

I loved all the toys on my 182, and I'm glad the R26 has all the same ones.

Never had a problem with the auto wipers, you can just turn them off or use regular wipe if they have a fit.

Auto lights are brilliant, and I had the climate control on permanently and it always worked very well..

I would have really missed the xenons and I hate the interior of the 182 cups - and the fact that they didn't colour code the washer jet blanking bits.

I never used the wipers on mine in all the time I had it let alone the auto ones, was worried they would work when it when for its first MOT !

Yes well most people actually drive their cars in the rain ;) I bet you checked the weather forecast before deciding whether to drive it lol

You can't use none auto wipers as they don't have a intermitant wipe option.

agree with your comments but i dont really use the auto stuff, car was at the right price so the FF al the way, plus there is a bigger market for the FF!!

So in other words this mate who was "tootling along at 15mph in traffic" was actually doing about 40. Either that or he has a club foot and he practically put the brake pedal thru the carpet.

To lock up both wheels in such circumstances is near on impossible 99% of the time..

Cup drivers are by no means better drivers.....your mate has proved that it would seem.
But if you are half as decent as you think you are, then you'd adapt to the car you are driving and not rely so heavily on the driver aids.
Any numpty can jump in an ABS equipped car, drive the nuts off it and then stand on the brakes in the hope that all will be fine and dandy.
Try it in a non ABS car and you will quickly find your somewhat limited skills (can you Cadence brake for example?) will catch you out.

The same applies to where in the car your engine sits. Any self respecting MK1 V6 owner will know that to push on in the wet is near enough comitting suicide.....they have learnt this, therefore they don't do it....just ask Norm. Hehe

hey guys,

I have a 172 ff - how do I know whether my autowipers are on (obviosuly if it rains they should come on) but is there anywhere on the dash which tells you. Also do 172s have auto lights and how do you operate these?

you have to put the stalk to the top position, then knock it down 1 to turn them on every single time you turn the car off and back on again and if they are not something you like or yours are psychiatric patients, just go back to top positon to deactivate.. or if it's raining of course, down below auto mode and control it yourself.

auto lights operate themselves when the engine is on. they simply turn on and turn off at their own judgement.

you can deactivate these - there is a guide in the guide section. something like turn to 2nd ignition, turn them on off on off about 3 times, and you will hear the bleep. same again to reactivate. not actually turned mine off as there is no need. if they come on, they come on. if you don't trust them, then just manually activate and they then stay on even with the key out - safe as any other cars.

agree a bit about the rear wiper comments above btw.. it wipes every time I select poxy reverse gear lol.. only if I activate them tho I believe. so reversing off the drive in non rainy weather is not interrupted. :)

That sums it up then, you have to be a better driver to avoid an accident in a 'non-abs' car and so if your a novice you will die and if your not your just more likely to. ;)

Ive owned a 182ff with both packs, taken a 182cup round silverstone, and driven both 172ff and cup. The differences are so slight it really doesnt matter, its all preference as to what you want inside the car really. I think the 182ff is the best package tbh, got the suspension gadgets and still quick. Most refined in the range. No difference between pace in any of the range tbh, i didnt notice anything when i drove the 172cup. Its cars without the cup suspension that you notice if anything. All god cars to be honest.:)

Ive had 4 renaults with auto lights and never had an issue with them ever (touch wood);)

abs has helped me once, and thats only cause i was driving like a tw@ few days after passing my test on a single track road (crest followed be corner) imho if you drive like a normal person then you will never need abs,

but its nice to have the reassurance its there if you want it, ever

i still feel deep down
no leather
no xenons
no abs

I've had two cars with auto wipers now and they've both been useless! Either not on at all, or wipe forever! There's nothing auto about it really :dead: love the auto lights though, made me think :D when I first went through a tunnel.

my first car was an R5T which had neither ABS or PS, you kids don't know your born with your satellite tv and dominos pizza on the internet.

Sounds like you all think you are Nigel Mansell, (he's the old equvalent of Lewis Hamilton).
 
This has kind of lost its way, really. I was comparing directly with my 182Cup by the way, as Paul suggested. In between his car being slagged of for being a Cup. Yawn ;)

They wanted to save cash Tom, thats what.

Yeh we thought it best not to pay extra for leather rears that never get used, dodgy automatic wipers that need manual invlovement to operate correctly and climate control that that can't control itself ;)

My CC works fine . Keeps the cabin at a constant temp as it's suppose to do . Auto wipers are a good thing imo and work fine in my 182 as they did in my 172 , it rains , they come on , it rains harder , they wipe faster . :)

I'd rather have the toys than not have them ;)

Never had any problems with my wipers or my climate control. I quite like the options, especially as i use it as my every day car. Wipers are great on motorway when there is loads of spray and you go past a lorry. Anyway if you dont like the options why not just turn them off :)
 
I think he's referring to the fact the intermittant on a car with auto wipers is controlled by the rain sensor as opposed to having a fixed interval.

The 172 Cup's the only one worth making a sacrifice for, IMO

182 Cup - LOL, no thanks. Megane's more or less the same.

Auto wipers, why? Are people incapable of switching on their own wipers? Same for auto lights. Pointless. If you have to trust your car as to when the lights should be on, you shouldn't be out of nappies, let alone driving a car.

Auto lights make me laugh, there's an aqueduct at the end of my road and you can spot any motor with auto lights, as they come on as they go under the aqueduct, then switch off on the other side! Yeah, it's worth them being on for 25 feet isn't it? :rolleyes:

I think Renault could have dropped more kit from the 172 Cup. It doesn't need electric mirrors or windows. Manual ones go wrong less often. Proper poverty spec rules!

Some bits like the auto wipers/lights are useless, but other bits like the seats and xenons i love.

Auto lights are a good idea when driving through tunnels if it is a sunny day. If you ever drive in spain it is the law to turn them on when you enter a tunnel. Ok we only have 4 days of sunshine a year in the UK but you get my point.

As for wipers, I think it has been mentioned already about spray from lorries and such like. I remember going round a roundabout once and bam straight through some water and on came the wipers.

Everything can be turned off or not used so I don't see the big deal about saying how useless they are. If you don't want to use them then don't.
