GAZ Coilovers - MY FEEDBACK

  Peugeot 308
ok, well its hard not to notice that these get some stick on here.

But hey, i went for the plunge.

I bought this kit...

http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=1441

after getting them fitted i found the ride was very harsh...as in i couldnt stand it.

i've since got the ride height back up (shes about 40mm lowered) and have fiddled with the extensive range of damping options.

Sorry to piss on some peoples fires, but this kit really is good. on soft, the kit feels like your not riding on coilovers, very plush and suitable for long distances/everyday.

Once on hard setting, again, it does the job it needs to, firm and very holding without being too hard.

At the moment I have it dead on in the middle for best of both worlds, very nice ride, handles alot better than standard.

No bouncyness, no unpredictablility...just smooth and fine handling.

anyway, i'll stop jabbering.

I just feel for the price i paid, and too how versatile this kit is...its a winner for me.

ive got this kit to, had it about 2 weeks, and still fiddling around with dampening to get it exactly right, but its really good piece of kit, really glad i brought them. Car sits at a perfect height, and the ride is really good, lots of settings so you can set it exactly how you want it, i dont use my car for work just for fun, so i have mine set up a bit harder, so i feelt he bumps and throw it round the bends. Highly recommend it

yea well ive raised it up about another 10mm since then, so its a bit better now and that road was pants, i think even my old saxo would have scrubbed down there lol

on another note;

i was in yeovil tesco petrol station filling up last night and saw you accelerating down the slip road

your car looks/sounds immense!!

Lol, at "pissing on some people's fires"

I had a set and they were quite simply the worst suspension mod I've ever had the misfortune to own. A set of £100 apex springs are a superior option. If you're happy fair enough but I wouldn't fit them to a car if I was given them tbh.

lol, yeah my car is pretty much standard so i doubt you will tell it apart from any other black clio on the road in yeovil

seen you driving on lysander road before i knew you were on here, il have to give you a race next time ;)

  1.6 focus zetec....
Whats the point in getting coilovers and having to higher them after a day because they're too harsh?? IMO that is not a good suspension setup unless its a track only car where the surface is usually always smooth.

Might aswell have saved some beans and bought some 40mm springs if thats all you can lower it by?!?

i dont see how they the worst suspension ever, 2 of my mates have the same setups on different cars an escort and an astra, both have gone through numerous suspension set ups and these are by far superior over them, obviously nothing on H&R and bilstein, but still i find them superb value for money! each to there own tho i guess

I've got the Gaz kit, only mine cost me £470 delivered from Corby Motorsport. I don't think it's harsh at all - that's what adjustable damping is for. The car handles a lot better since I put the kit on - much more controlled bodyroll. I've got it on medium ish sort of setting, and the car understeers less then it did before, even with budgets on the front.

Simple, little or no R&D resulting in inappropriate spring and/or damper rates. When the kits came out a little after myself and IIRC 6 other members on here had taken them off because they were so bad IIRC Gary G and Ben R had a set put on a damper dyno machine and said the resulting graphs made for interesting reading to the point of being laughable.

Just because they are coilovers does not make them better than what Renault ploughed a fortune into developing by default. A tinpot company in the UK doesnt have the same budget and resources for a start. The likes of Bilstien and H&R have a proven consistantly good history and a long list of motorsport success. The difference when driving them should stand out even to some of the clueless luddites that inhabit this forum.

I can see why some people might not like them, but personally i like them, im not saying the are amazing, h&r an Bilstein are allways going to be miles ahead, but unless you've got mega money to afford them, they are a dream away.
The adjustable dampening is why i brought them, not just because they are coilovers, the standard cup pack suspension is very good aswell, but i wanted to get the ride height i wanted along with setting the suspension up how i wanted, so i went with these.

Just out of interest, have you got a link or to the graphs or any way I can see them, wouldnt mind seeing the results.

Tbh the extra couple of hundred is worth it. I would sooner run around on stock suspension than the Gaz kit. The only benefit it offers IMO is a lower look and as much as I despise the standard ride height I'll suffer it in the interest of better handling, I guess I must be getting old.

If your budget doesnt stretch to H&R's or Bilsteins etc but you want to uprate the suspension for the same money as second rate coilovers like the Gaz you could put on a good quality set of lowering springs and dampers.

I cant remember if it got posted on here there was a discussion on the forum at some point I think. I'd also spoken to both Gary and Ben on the phone at the time because I'd had conversations with them and a couple of the other guys on here who'd had the misfortune of buying them and being equally apalled by them.

I'm on GAZ Coilovers and on Poor Roads they are quite Harsh but I've never been in a Car on Coilovers where Bumpy and Pot Holed Roads haven't been a little uncomfortable, I got my Coilovers for £200 aswell so I'm Pretty Happy :D

£200?! How did you manage that?

I've had numerous cars with other suspension on it and the Gaz haven't been anymore harsh then any of them - had a 205Gti on Avo adjustables, a Saxo Vts on Koni adjustables, a kit car on Spax coilovers, and a Focus on standard shocks with lowering springs.

The 182 is pretty much lower then all of them except the 205, and less bouncy. Poor roads can get a bit choppy - but then everyones car I know with coilovers have a harsher ride then mine.

For the money don't think you can go wrong - but at the next SW meet maybe I'll try to see what cars with other coilovers are like.
