Gear box gone? :(

Bought the car three weeks ago so i know i have some right with the trader i got it off of however i will put that in another thread.

The car has been running fine since i got it then today when setting off i noticed a whining sound when putting power on however it was driving fine so thought i'd take a look when i got a chance. Not 1 mile after i got a thud sound and it wasn't in gear, i couldnt select any gear at all. Luckily i was able to put my hazards on without being much of a problem. I turned my car off and had a play with the gears, it was a little stiff but it started to be fine and would go into gear fine. I set off driving again being careful and listening out and the same thing happened again, i could get in some gears and not others.

After taking it on a side street i reversed, got about 2m and got a thud and the car stopped. Setting back off in first it really shakes the car before i get any movement, if i change at low revs it changes fine but is whining then it locks up and i cant change gear and gear stick becomes stuck.

Anyway to cut a long story short it feels like the gear box has gone and the AA man who recovered me also thought the same. I'm stuck in Manchester at Uni now without able to get home and places like Mr Clutch expect it would be £800+ for it changing!!

Anyone any ideas on this?

Thanks :(

Do not go anywhere near Mr Clutch !!!!!!!

What year is you clio ? I have a box for a 172 but its a phase 1.

Its a 182 2004 that i have. Didn't really want to go any where near them they were just on my way back (long walk back!) so thought i'd call in. I don't know anywhere around here to try really. I'll have a search for some garages and get some quotes.

They quoted me £200 to replace the clutch. Later i found out they actually fit recon clutches !!!

Sorry but my gearbox wont fit your car.

Ah well thanks for offering anyway.

I would like to think the clutch has done (in some ways such as the price) but it feels and felt spot on, there is even a receipt (at home an hour away!) for a replacement clutch a couple of years ago which makes it harder to think it may be that.

Got it to a garage just round the corner earlier on. The guy says it could be just the bearings that have gone or the whole box. He doesn't know until it is out and open. When the wheels are spinning they move then lock up and it goes into gear a little even though it is in neutral. Then it will drop back out and they will spin free again. Need to contact the trader now.

The car is back with the trader, he's off to fix it. I had to ring him earlier to find out what was happening and he said it was the gear box that was gone and the gear selector too. I've tried searching around and can't actually find out what the selector part is? I'm wanting to know as apparently i have to pay for that part as its not 'part of the warranty' haha.

Best speaking to someone in the know like Daniel but I would have thought the garage has to pay for all of the repair.
