Gear linkage

Went under the car last night to check the dogbone mount and it looks like it has been replaced quite recenly. While I was there had a wiggle of the gear linkage and it's ridiculously slack. Now am I right in thinking that just above the cat behind the heatshield is a ball joint? And if so would it be this that's worn? Don't want to go through all the effort of changing it if this isn't going to be the cause of the horrific amounts of left to right movement in the gearstick (even in gear) it even wobbles in gear when coasting.

Also if it does need changing how much is the part?

Yeah I know they are bad anyway but mine has got a lot worse since I've had it. Just wondered if it's worth replacing? It actually fell out of 3rd gear while accelerating when I hit a pot hole (it wasn't even big)
