Gearbox/clutch advice ASAP...

M

mini-valver

Had a loud knocking/rattle from the box area once the car was warm but it went away when I dipped the clutch. So, although it sounded a bit brutal to be the release bearing, I put it down to that. Got the box off today, release bearing feels fine, clutch has plenty on it, all springs are ok, pressure plate feels strong and everything looks and feels as it should. So, do I hope it was just a combination of some slightly worn clutch components OR replace the box as a precaution? Weird how it was ok when the clutch was down though.

Box is out ATM, car is on axle stands outside and I need it for monday. Already have a clutch kit to fit but if people think it could be the box (I dont want some flid guessing, need to be pretty positive) I'll try and track one down tommorrow. It'll be a JB3 IIRC but what box's will fit and have the same (ish) ratio's, strength and shaft fitment as mine? I dont want to re-fit the clutch and box to have the same wanky knocking noise as it was a ballache on axle stands and the captive bolts have all spun=Uncool.

Help. If you have a box, PM me....

Erm, maybe? Not 100% sure TBH, could have sworn they are JB3 though!

Couple of thousand mile old one......Talk to me....

Matteh, not that bad but its pretty similar sound wise, lol. Go away when you dip the clutch though??

yep... it was deffo the box :dapprove:

I was driving along and it sounded like one of those pile driving machines... I thought it was a construction site at first! but then on my way home up a hill 1st just died. I think that's what was rattling around :D

Olly wants to know if it made a noise when stationary and driving. Or just one of the two.

You're positive that the sound went when you had the clutch in?? If you are, I need a box fast, lol. 1st has been hard to get into when rolling upto speed bumps etc for a while actually and drive hard when "on it"

ONly when warm. DOes it on idle, when driving it's hard to tell because both shafts are fucked and its uber noisy inside. New shafts are here to go in when the box is back in anyway!

Fact its difficult to get into first could just be the linkage....?

He reckons imput shaft...also he asks: when engine warm or when gearbox warm? I.e after being driven or just turned on and left to idle, as obv. transmission will still be cold.

Clunking or tinny noise?

I f**king love being the messenger.

as for what boxes fit, all JB3s and JC5s should fit...

just be careful when choosing ratios

Probably the bearings on the input shaft. Not uncommon...

I'd change the box to be on the safe side. And a new clutch to be sure.

Input shaft bearing would be my guess as well. Failed input shaft bearing can sound very much like a failing release bearing only with more weight behind it!

Cheers
