Gearbox crunching 172

Just read on another post, that the syncro's are weak with 200's from 3rd to 4th, also mentioned the 172/182 gearbox 'issues'.

Are these issues with the 172/182 'box the same, as sometimes when im driving quicker than a normal commute, it struggles to go from 2nd to 3rd (crunches), but this is inconsistent and does happen all the time, I always give time for engine and gearbox plenty of time to warm up before giving it the beans.

any info, would be appreciated

Could be a syncro issue, first thing I'd do is swap the 'box fluid for some nice shiny new stuff.

Is changing the box fluid a fairly easy job? What's the best type of fluid to go for?

Tranself 75w/80 iirc

Most jc5 boxes snick from 2nd to 3rd when cold. Takes a long time for box oil to warm as well, much much longer than engine.
