Gearbox/diff noise

I bought this car and drove it home. It wasn't making the noise then.

I changed the clutch and i drove it to and from the mot place and it's noisy as hell.

Possible causes?

I can't believe i have broken the diff/gearbox...

Video of noise. Changes with throttle so thinking it's diff related.

I put oil in until overflowed out.

Everything is tight i believe.

Are they sensitive if they are not exactly 3.1 litres?

I torqued them up to tightest setting on my torque wrench, which iirc is 240nm.

270nm is the proper setting IIRC but shouldn't be the issue,
Does it makes noise stationary with the clutch depressed/released or is it just when in motion?

Just when driving. Goes quiet if i boot it.

@jezer101 well that's a new one on me. Never heard anything like that before! Did you put the clutch plate in the correct way round?

I can't remember i looked it up as i was doing it. So I'm pretty sure it was the right way round. If it was the clutch wouldn't it be all the time?

Not necessarily mate no. The clutch is under pressure when the pedal isn't pressed. Does it go if you press the clutch? It sounds more like a vibration noise to me.

When driving along if i dip the clutch, yes it goes. Coasting in neutral it goes, with clutch up it goes.

What will happen if the clutch is the wrong way round?

Right ok, well if it's only doing it when there's drive going through the box, it sounds like it is indeed an internal issue mate

No problem mate. Where are you located?

Located in Gloucester. It's a cup gearbox which makes it a pita, as i have a normal 172 box sat here!

When you say 'normal 172 box', do you mean a Ph1 gearbox? If it's a ph2 box it'll be a jc5 129 mate. A jc5 089 is a ph1 item and will also fit.

There's nothing special about a cup gearbox mate.

Yeah it's a phase 2 172. It's just the speedo i know reads off box on a cup.

Unless there is a workaround.

Upload a picture of the other box you've got mate. I'll be able to tell you if it's a useable box. Some of the ph2 boxes are still 129's, but they just don't have the speedo sender fitted.

I did think when i was looking at it, it was the same. As it had the same casting where the speedo sensor goes on the cup box. It's just it looked like it was filled.

I will get a picture up asap.

On the top picture, as you look down the hole where the speedo sensor goes in, can you see the driveshaft? I can't tell off that picture mate.

looks like a non speedo drive.

No you can't it's solid. Is it just a case of making a hole, or is there something else needed internally?

No mate afraid not. They can be modified, but it's not just a simple case of opening the hole up unfortunately.

That sucks.

I did 60 miles on it yesterday and it's my daily so we will see how long it lasts... [emoji23]
