ive looked into this and the short answer is no one
quaife will make a gearset but you must buy 10+ or pay for development
i also spoke to k-tec they had the housing and internals shot peened to make the box stronger but its the synchros that are the problem, they are an old design
fred talked about a gearset, but he hasnt got back to me yet (im on my 3rd box btw) in 22k miles

oh
ok
mines ok atm(off the road)just wanted to find a better gear set.must be possible
i mean how hard can it be? grinder bit of tig/mig welding! linkedge sorted!
only prob with a different gearboy from another car/manafactorer is gear ratios will be different!
i know about the diff that k-tec does but wouldnt that just put more strain on the box?:S

i'm on my 2nd box :) my first one only lasted me a fortnight!!!!!!
and this one doesnt always sound to clever and throws oil out when i do mway journeys in 5th gear (and the isnt to much in)
think an engine mounts gone now so i have to replace them but still i want my gbox sorted i think thats 3 of us in for a better box

  80MPG BEEZA
yea how much of a price though? like i think i'm already gonna sell my soul so k-tec will put 300bhp in my beast but i dunno if my gf will sell her soul for a sequential

sadev box is availible its £3-4 grand and needs rebuilding every 2000 miles or so you will also need to change the drive shafts and clutch not worth it may as well keep a stock of JC5 boxes, ive got 2 fully rebuilt boxes now incase one goes pop.

*we demand better gbox's you french as*'s*

my language is getting appauling but how am i ever gonna grin at an evo driver as i zoom by if knowone will make one
i'm sure with all todays technologies and materials we could make a box out of something daft - i mean what about the material the terminator was made out of? he was pretty strong :)

Ebay steals mate first one set me back £67 went to surrey to pick it up and second one had a reserve of £250 it didnt sell i offered £100 and picked it up, they are both cup boxes converted to 182 diff mech and fully rebuilt may sell one in a few months as my current box is smooth as

  80MPG BEEZA
ur joking? i offered a guy 350 for a box as he was trying to sell the lot for 750 and it had been on ebay for over a month and he was like i cant wait a fortnight for the money taking the biscuit really i paid 350 for my 2nd, owwaaa mate 250 with the 182 diff mech :)

Who here is actually willing to pay for a box though?

Most people cringe at a rebuild bost of £450, which in the grand scheme of box's and the time they take to build, is nothing. Who here is willing to pay over a grand for a stronger, but still not invincible box?

And who here is willing to live day to day with an 'invincible' box.

I've never had a problem with box's, i've never had a problem with synchros, i've never had a problem with anything. The main problem i find is that people today just cannot treat a box properly. Sure it would be nice if they could stand up to all the abuse thrown at them, but they cant. They survive fine though if you dont rush your changes, if you match engine speed to input shaft speed on EVERY upchange and downchange. So basically its adjusting your style of driving, which is alot cheaper.

Sure, mr.turbo and torque man will have more of an issue, but use it properly and care for it, and it'll last pretty darn well. The amount of people i see who just plain cannot drive a manual is astounding, even moreso when you point it out and they get offended........then go buy another box.

I've been driving around on my dead clutch now for 30k, why? Because the only slipping it gets is when moving from a stop, every change up is timed so that there is no deviation from RPM, and every downchange utilises heel&toe, so there is never any slip. Its stil going fine even when you rag it.

One of the main problems you'll find isnt the gearset strength or the synchos (as you can drive without them), but the helicut gears are always wanting to push eachother away, and the more torque you have, the more you flex the shafts and bearings. Then you slip one tooth and bang, you strip the whole gear. Its also the same reason the diffs pop on older box's that have the retaining circlip.

i wudnt pay 450 for a rebuild i'd get a new one and i'd be willing to pay over a grand if i knew it wud stand more abuse then standard isnt that what aftermarkets all about?
i bet evo's and scoobs have better box's available down the lines,

yea i probaly dont treat my box right but i have just started learning heel & toe but still i'd rather know the box can stand my glutteny when i feel like it. i mean if my gf moaned everytime i banged her hard i'd say tuffen up or your going bye and get myself a hardher more butch model

  172 cup'd extreme
i treat my new box right with day to day driving but on track and at quarter miles i just cant help but abuse it! i even double clutch now and i dont even change without using the clutch

  80MPG BEEZA
do people actually change gear without using the clutch? thats pretty insane in the membrane!

you fancy selling a box then jon?

well i think £500 is ok for a rebuild/replacement box .
yeh well mines coping ok atm! 260bhp bbpt convertion racing clutch! 17"wheels! heavy foot too.
im gonna have my engine and gear box out soon so while its out i my have a look

  80MPG BEEZA
mine doesnt crunch it slips in and out of gears fine it just sounds crap then gearbox mount has gone now but my gbox is chucking oil out of the breather pipe, it did have to much in before it kicked loads out i put it to the right level and its kicked some out today? i dont think this can be linked with the mount can it? i'm on my holiday in a weeks time so i'm gonna replace the mount and get an uprated dogbone but i dont think that will help the internals but it will stop the awful noise when i accelerate hard.

anyone up for a group buy on the dogbone mounts? see if we can get a discount?

Isn't it the Sadev gearset thats £3-4k. Thought it was £7k for a full box.

From my experience with mine I just learned how to swap the boxes quickly and bought a load for £30 each ready to swap in.

However if you want a comparison for how much a box that will handle the power will cost (this is based on what we used to charge when I built gearboxes) and for an Astra rally car:

F20 casing rebuilt with a quaife close ratio gearset - max 220bhp - £1950 + VAT
6 speed sequential quaife gearbox - max 230bhp - £7k to buy and if run with more power a £600 rebuild after every rally
6 speed H pattern x-trac gearbox - £7k 2nd hand
6 speed sequential x-trac gearbox - £10k 2nd hand, £18k new - rebuild every 1000 miles

Good gearboxes aren't cheap, infact usually they cost more than the engine.

yea i was thinking that i mean how much does the turbo push out?

this is starting to annoy me now,

ben what do u think cud be causing oil to come out of my breather? cud it because of the movement due to the mount?

I've had some stronger selector forks cast up for mine as thats what I kept braking but I haven't had chance to machine them yet.

The last gearbox I built for mine had uprated bearings and they were fine but I still snapped a fork.

The forks snapping is my fault, as I was shifting too fast trying to go quicker drag racing.

we already do a 6speed conversion with strengthened internals for the JC5 (172/182/williams boxes) and a plated LSD

but as Ben says, money is the issue

ours is over £3K

Sadev on the road - forget it, it'll cost you £3K per year to run that
