Gearbox issues

After some advice.
My gearbox since I got the car has had a slight whine in 5th gear. Lately it's started to, not crunch... But make an odd grinding sort of noise going into 5th (all other gears are fine).

Now... In 5th when I let off the accelerator it makes a whirring noise and if I'm doing lower speeds in 5th gear it makes the most horrendous choppy sort of noise (almost sounds like something is flapping around).
Yet again, doesn't do this in any other gear. - could this be gearbox OR something else and just a co-incidence?

The seal around the selector is leaking - now I'm going to top up the gearbox oil but can I get this selector fixed anywhere, and will keeping it topped up prolong the life of the box?

Also, how much is a recon box? As I feel it's on its last legs.

Thanks,

Ollie

iirc 5th gear is on its own separate from other gear cluster, its on the same shaft but behind the metal cover(looks like a sump) on the side of the box nearest the chassis. I have seen before on french gearboxes where the nut holding the 5th gear on has become loose, and in very rare cases the 5th gear has had some teeth missing, could be well worth a look. BTW im a tech lol :)

Regarding the above 5th/Reverse end issue, when this happens you tend to find it won't stay In 5th and it'll pop out under load.

Tbh I doubt it's anything come loose as it has been whining for a while now.
How much am I looking at to get this job done? IE, getting the box rebuilt and then fitted?

Is it worth topping up the oil and keeping it going until it goes bang?

Cheers all

^Ah I see, this happened on my old saxo , I had a weird noise/whine, tightened the nut and it went away lol, it was unusual because the nut was still fairly nipped still but it did tightened up a fair bit more, and the noise was there for over a year until I decided to look, was nice to get rid of it lol.

I've just taken the end cap off my gearbox this morning because it was wining since I had it. About a week ago I lost 5 gear. The gearbox is buggered now!

The oil was black and hardly any left, change the oil and fix the leak and you may get a couple more thousand out of it while you get a new box sorted.

How do I go about fixing the leak? It's the selector seal I believe that is leaking (heard its common) ... But yeah, how do I fix this? Surely I don't have to top up the oil every month?! As it's a shitty job to do.

Cheers

Il have to look into it. I have a specialist I've been talking to a lot lately; worst case scenario il just ring him up and ask.

Either way I can see it being a massive pain in the arse!

Yer not cheap gearbox out refurb may want to think about putting a new clutch in as well .

Yeah id definitely get a new clutch on it. Hopefully it'll last me a while longer yet if I top up oil.

Just more of the inconvenience factor of it that's annoying, not so much the cost.

are there any companies out there people recommend to get it refurbed by?

Cheers

i think people on have used a company called agency transmission on here but not sure but you could put a thread and find out a rough price .

Would be much happier to get mine refurbed than get a second hand one of eBay!
For what you would buy off eBay let say £150 you don't know what your going to get at least some one like agency for the refurb if it cost you £350 at a guess ? Plus warranty I no where I would go .

I will definitely 100% be getting it refurbed. Not even trying my luck with a 2nd hand box.

Won't be fitting myself either, will go to a specialist with it or see if I can get a friend who's very mechanically minded to help me. I can do certain jobs, but a box change on the road outside my house is a bit much lol.

I will give agency transmissions a call over the next couple days and see what they charge for a box rebuild.

Is there not a company where you can give them your old box and exchange for a rebuilt unit? Like part ex'ing? So they sell you a new box and take off money for your buggered one? Surely there must be something like that out there. Just looking at all the options before I jump in and spend nearly £400 at agency.

As said the other day, give Agency a ring. He'll only do what needs doing- I've never paid £375....

Normally £220-270 iirc.

that's just bearings and seals though aint it, that thing needs a new gear and is one of the selectors fubar too?

Yep, in that situation, I'd be buying a second hand cheap box, and getting that rebuilt.,,

Hi,

Where is the nut that needs tightening? Does anyone have any pictures or "idiots directions" so I can find it please?

Had a similar problem myself this morning .. driving along in 5th then a whirring / whining noise started, got louder over a few seconds and then the car popped out of 5th and now won't go back in. All the other gears are fine and not had any problems / noises / indications of a shot box before this .. so hoping and praying it could just be the nut in need of tightening rather than a whole new box. So any help finding the nut would be great :)

Did you get anywhere with this?

Here is a photo of the end cap of the gearbox, you can see the nuts here, you can get to this under the car without taking too much out.

Thanks for the reply .. can't figure out what I'm looking at tho :-( Front N/S, wheel off, then bottom of the picture is drive shaft (still in place)? and wishbone? And then .. errm .. bit lost. Something's been taken off? then what would need tightening?

Local independent Renault place seemed to think that to take a look and diagnose they'd need to drop the gearbox which would mean a new pump when they put it back together or something .. got a bit lost . Any help much appreciated.
