Gearbox leak on 182

  Clio 182/ RX-8
Ok after searching this forum for similar threads i can see that a small leak is just normal.

But how much is a small leak? because after leaving the car standing in the same spot for a week i had a small patch of gearbox oil on the drive.

It looks like its coming from around the gear selector area, can this be cured? or will i need buy some shares into castrol so i can top up the fluid every week?

Anyone else have a similar experience?

hey i think im having the same problem, you having trouble selecting gears? Renault are just half way through finding out whats wrong with mine, so ill let you know what it was if thats any help

They all leak a bit anayway epend what you think is a lot a drop of oil when it gets wet looks alike a load of oil.

Nope dont have any problems selecting gears, its purely just the leaking bit. Ive took the splash shield off the bottom and wiped all of the excess oil from the linkages and components to try and see where it is coming from. But i still cant pinpoint exactly where.

Im not convinced its just a normal occasional leak because its not just the odd drop every now and then. Its a good few drops a day.

Can anyone else shed any light on this?

Otherwise it may be a trip to my local renault specialist to see what they can diagnose:S

The gear selector weeps oil to lubricate it a small patch is normal, most clio's a fitted with a small tray to catch the oil.

yea, eek, renault phoned me up today, they say that i have a crack in my gearbox??? Im sorry but a 47,000 172? They have told me that it is causing an oil leak and is making the gears crunch sometimes when you accrelate fast from first to second? They want £1484.63 to fit a recon box, is it me or are they having me on?? Conisdering the fact my bonnet wouldnt realese when i was lowering my car so i had the car on a lift and took the front bumper and plastic trims off from underneath the car, and there was no oil leak at all? To be honest if its a very small leak should i be worried??

Hmm will have to keep an eye on it then.

Seems like a very poor design if its designed to lubricate itself in that way.
Warrenty is up now, but wouldnt take it back to renault after my last experience anyway. They tried to tell me my cv boot had gone and i needed a new drive shaft at £500 odd quid, quite safe to say i never went back.

What gearbox oil do people use?

Might aswell stock up now.;)

Stock Renault 70W-80 is good otherwise I use the Millers 75/90 stuff all the time.

Its not a great desing but its perfectly adequate.

I'm in the process of investigating a leak on my 172 @ 60000Km (see thread http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=263870 for pics) - on the weekend I pulled off the cover and cleaned everything up - I will check in 2 weeks to see how much has leaked. It looks like it's a fairly straightforward process to change the box oil - while I was underneath the car the drain plug and the black plastic "butterfly" fill plug were clearly visible. Anyone have the specs on how many cc's of oil are required to fill??

Renault recomended fluids/amounts/grades to be used.
