gearbox on a 2002 172 lost 2nd gear!!!!

Hi ppl

i have a mk2 2002 172

I pulled away yesterday and i missed 2nd gear
the problem is that it won't go in 2nd at all

can any 1 help


or tell me where 2 go i'am based (ESSEX)

Gear selector/rods f00ked?

Or your syncromesh isn't working as it should do?

When you say it won't go into 2nd at all, have you tried getting it into second with the engine off and just depressing the clutch?

Does it make a crunching sound when you try and get second? Does it just feel jammed?

yes i've tried putting it in 2nd with the engine off ans it won't go in

no it doesn't crunch it feel's spongy as you try putting it in to 2nd
and it just let it go in if that make sence

Selector or something is bent!

Aye likes like the rods might be bent/obstructed and not allowing you to select the gear. Bit of a ballache, but you'll need your car up on ramps to check it out.

Probably just your arm mate, but seriously it might be a very very minor issue. Or it could be a big issues, take it to a reputable garage and ask them to check the push rods.

Bent rod could be corrected easily, but if theres anything broken a new gearbox could be expensive

if you're luckly you will of bent the linkage (we do it quite often) but worse case is a bill for around £1K+

Fred...don't tell him that. Put it more positively; if the s**t hits the fan your looking at £300 plus selling a kidney.

Given its only one gear you have a problem in, i'd hope for a bent rod. Shame its second gear though, thats the fun gear

Basically attached to your gearstick, are rods which translate your movements into the correct gear, if one of these gets bent then your movements aren't translated correctly, therefore you cant get into gear.

If its not your rods that are bent then frankly im clueless as im not sure on the setup of the gearbox on the Clio RS, but it maybe just an issue with your syncromesh, or it might be something more simple like something obstructing the gear.

Can't help though im afraid, take it to renault and ask for a diagnosis.
