Gearbox out the top?

  182 Trophy
Someone mentioned to me a while back that its possible to get the gearbox out of the top.

I'm a little sceptical, but anything that's saves a bit of time (and rolling around on the floor) sounds like something worth investigating to me.

So, is it possible?

It's not that hard. Just a bit fiddly and easier with two people.

Slide it out into the wheel arch then lift it up.

Yep, more than possible.

It's a 50/50 balance tbh, whether you want to drop the subframe and take it out the bottom, or strip more up top and remove it out that way.

I've done it both ways, and prefer to take it out the top on the driveway, but know a lot of the specialists prefer it out the bottom (easier if you're on a ramp etc)

I don't understand why people piss about with awkward methods in the hope of saving time.

Removing the subframe takes no time at all with the right tools, and makes the job a hell of a lot easier than trying to drag it through the engine bay, or squeezing it through the arch with the subframe half undone.

I prefer if I can stay off the floor if it is to be done on my drive way. I know I have a subframe bolt with the captive nut gone for a start.

i done mine on the driveway, took it out the bottom 2 of my subframe captive nuts snapped but was easy enough to get a deep socket on them.

Used to take them out the top on the mk1 valvers etc.

Mainly due to most of bolts being seized due to age.

I went for the bottom in the end.

I'm at 6 hours so far with the OSF balljoint to bolt up and ns shock/hub/driveshaft to bolt up.

Only trouble is, I'm worried after forgetting to unbolt the rack, I might have pulled on it too hard - I found both halves of the column pulled apart.
