Gearbox problems-HELP

since i have owned my clio it has always jumped out of second gear when you come off throttle. CHanged the bottom engine mount and gear linkage and it cured it almost. Last night at the drag racing i missed second gear twice. I can change gear very well and i have never missed and i did last night twice. Is it a gear box problem? been told that if the gearbox is hot then i wont go into 2nd on a quick change, especially if the revs are high. Anyway, all of today i have been trying to recreate yesterday and its been going into gear fine. Is my gearbox f**ked? if so these are my options,


Get Nick Hill to refurb the gearbox while my willy engine is being fitted, price can be between £250 and £400 depending on what needs changing. That price is fitted.
Pay £430 for a new gearbox from renault, again that price is fitted
OR wait for the gearbox to fail completely and then pay £530 for a fully recon gearbox FITTED at some place that was recomended to me.
Obviously none of this will need doing if the gearbox is infact fine and i am being paranoid but ALL help is appreciated!

Since the gbox is coming off anyway, it can easily be opened up, cleaned and inspected for anything untoward. Gboxes arent disposable IMO, they can usually be patched up providing the expetise/parts are available.

Well Nick is not willing to strip the gearbox down and put it back together just to find out whats up with it obviously SO no other option really, but do u think it is f**ked?

Do any of your mates have this problem on theirs when they are racing?

Is the gearbox oil linked to the motor oil? Or does it use slightly thinker oil? Is there enough in there? does it need draining and re-filling to get rid of fragments of 2nd gear?

Sounds like the synchro in second gears had it, my car used to be like that, then one day I couldnt get 1st or 2nd cos the selector in the gearbox snapped.

Thankfully Ive got a mate who works at a gearbox specialists, and he completely stripped the box and rebuilt it with new synchros , bearings and selectors and for good measure he put in a new clutch for £450.

Id think about getting it looked at or changed. It would be no good know your eng is gonna be like new and then find you have a massive bill for a gearbox a few thousand miles later.

Ask yourself hopw many miles has it done and what stress will be put on it from your new higher power engine. Id get it changed for the peace of mind and if the engine is gonna be swapped the job must be easier/cheaper now than when it does go.

How long does a box last for normally? And the clutch? On 70k at the mo and everything is still ok but not sure when mine will be OK till.

mine went at 60k and i had the problems u were having, it had to be really hot tho it was fine a lot of the time unless id been sitting in traffic for ages or summat or racin

id really consider it while its out jus for piece of mind i wouldnt hav thought urs wud hav gone wid ur low miles but u hav hammered it

UPDATE- tried giving it hell today, it refuses to go into 2nd if you go for a high rev quick change(think thats what f**ked it in first place!). normal driving is fine but been told by many peeps that it will just get worse. Think i am gonna give it to Nick Hill to sort while the engine is out and hope that not alot needs changing. could get a reno one and hope it is like new BUT my car has only done 27k so apart from second gear it should be ok. i hope. will keep u noted. keep the replies comin tho!

fitted at reno thats a BARGAIN IF ITS A BRAND NEW BOX COVERED UNDER WARRANTY TOO

when and if my box goes i will be going staright for a new onw.

are u sure thats the price fitted clean 16v seems too cheap to me

Renault mainly do recond boxes for the 16v - my mate had one 20k miles ago and now its whining! (could be an auxillary part I guess).

I had mine fully rebuilt with new bearings and the likes for £270. I wasnt having any real problems with it but I was at 70k and when it was looked at it was worth having done.

So u didnt get a willy gearbox with the engine?

no willy gearbox with engine, the reno price is not including fitting but my engine is being changed so nick hill said he wont charge me for fitting! been told that the reno gearboxs 9 times out of 10 are brand new inside with old casing because they come with guarentee
