Gearbox probs, disintegrated selector fork

  clio
Morning...Thi s is probably the wrong forum as I've a 1.5 dci , so not exactly sport but I'm hoping this community is more enthusiastic and therefore knowlageable about nasty interanl mechanicals !!
Yesterday , I replaced a wheel as it was a bit out of round and had the tyres balanced as there was a bit of a wobble and actually it was much improved but not gone, Im suspecting a passenger side drive shaft now as theres evidence that a previous owner might have had a knock on that front wheel and its looks like it might be a bit knackered...anyway
this morning on the way from dropping my wife at the airport, it began to drop out of 5th, I thought perhaps it was the vibration so popped it back in to 5th a couple of times, on the last time it really kicked out and the gear leaver hit my knee, and there was no more fith, no clonk into gear, no resistance at all, got home in fourth.. Ive dropped the engine slightly and taken the tin pot type side cover off the gear box, and theres a bunch of melted looking metal, its the prongs off the gear selector forks, disintegrated...I've no way to tell if it was poping out of gear because the fork was giving up or if the fork gave up because it was popping out of gear, the oil looks old and there dosent seem a lot of it eitherso maybe it was that.. question is can I replace the fork without removing the gear box ??? cos getting the box out looks like a right pain in the backside ? any spanner heros out there with any idea ?? your time is much appreciated guys....

hi mate, sounds like it run dry to me! i wouldnt risk just rebuilding 5th coz all the metal swarf will have got around the whole box. the box looks worse than it actually is to get out, the only tricky bit is dropping the subframe coz the bolts corrode into the nuts in the chasis legs. use the sticker or the stamped in numbers off the box to get the correct box when getting a replacement coz theres load of differnt boxes.
