rite, i took my clio in to have the wheel bearings replaced and the mechanic told me he thought the noise was the gearbox bearings.

the noise gets quieter round right hand corners and is still there with the clutch depressed, would a right/left hand bend change the noise of a gearbox bearing? cars done 130k and is a mk1 1.4 btw.

if it is the worst, how much labour/parts for gearbox? havnt got time to do it myself coz takin missus away for a dirty weekend next week!

check the circlip on the nearside DS side of the diff.

i changed the driveshafts the other day, wot am i lookin for? what noise would a knackered diff bearing make? thanx for help btw!

take the neaside DS out. the tri claw bit that fits ito the diff. Just around there is a large circlip.

would this circlip cause the noise or is it a sign that the gbox bearing is gone?

yes, its makes a noise as it holds it in.

can this be fixed? or does it mean a new box? also is it worth getting a scrappy box worth it or is it better shelling out for a recon1? (if it needed replacing that is)

it can do yes as the carrier messes about on the ds claw

if the circlip comes out,the diff centre will come adrift and you will completly lose drive.diff bearings can make the same noise as wheel bearings.this is sometimes the cause of the circlip coming out.the diff bearings get worn and to much load is put on the circlip due to play in the bearings which eventually pops the circlip out.if it is your gearbox bearings it would probably more economical to fit a recon gearbox.

cheers for your help lads jus got car back and its fine now it was the wheel bearings in the end the whole thing had split thus causing the noise so saved myself a few quid!

My Gearbox completely lost drive on Tuesday night, only had the box 6 months. its going to Renault tomorrow to be fixed under warranty.

Think its the circlip, but why should i have to much about with it.

why should you have too much what with it?

if the box is fairly new then you can just fit a new circlip shouldnt be anything else to worry about.
