Gearknob Removal and Refitting

Have bought a new (standard) gearknob for my 04 1.2 Dynamique as the silver top on mine was wrecked when I bought the car, so have gone for a new 1 which is fitted to the Campus Sport's as the silver bit is still the same shade but the R 1 3 5 2 4 bit is written in black not silver so its easier to see, but essentially is the same gearknob, i.e. same shape/size/fits the same way etc.

what I would like to know is the best way to remove the old gearknob and fit the new 1??

p.s. to save starting a new topic, my drivers door electric window works with the ignition off, although nothing else e.g. wipers, indicators, mirrors, heater etc. work with it off, is it normal for the drivers window to work (open/close) with the ignition off?

lastly, at night when I turn my lights on, when all the interior switchgear lights up e.g. heater controls, window switches, stereo buttons etc. my electric mirror switch and controller doesnt light up, is the lights inside the electric mirror switch farked or is it normal??

The top bit in the gearstick pops upwards you can just replace that bit.

My drivers window does that, after a few minutes it won't let you do it, IIRC.

The window is a feature to allow you to close your window if you have turned off the ignition with it still down, the timer is 15 minutes iirc.

The silver insert on the gear knobs are interchangeable as Tom says, they simply pop out.

Just cut your old gear knob off if you have a replacement. A lot of hassle to remove it without damage.

I did consider changing it by just swapping the tops but I noticed a wee nick on the side of the original knob too, plus as you've gotta buy the complete gearknob from renault I might as well fit the whole brand new 1.

p.s. I work for arnold clark and the guy in parts at our renault dealership I got it from said that a. the tops dont simply "pop" off, and 2ndly that to remove the knob is a case of sawing it down the middle with a hacksaw.

that said, I dont care, just want to know the quickest and easiest way to remove the old 1, dont care if it gets damaged so long as the stick/lift up reverse bit themselves dont get damaged.

p.s. Daz how come if the window staying operative for 15mins is so you can close your window if you've turned the ignition off with the window still open then why cant you do the same with the passenger door window, it only works with the ignition on. similarly, my drivers window not only works after you've turned the ignition off, but also before you've even turned it on, i.e. unlock the car, get in, press window switch, voila window goes up/down

The tops do pop off, give it a go. A saw would be the easiest option.

Mine doesn't work when I first unlock the car, only when the ignition has been on then switched off, I have no idea behind the reasoning I just believed it was a convenience feature.

Also as Len says the window switches off if you open the door before the timer lapses.

the whole leather gear knob is screwed and glued on , if you want to remove it , you will have to cut it mate .

best way is to saw down the middle... so you work for one of the worst dealers.. with a parts guy who knows nothing.. as you can just pop the middle out, flat bladed screwdriver.
