Glass sealants, worth it?

Two questions really...

1. Are glass sealants worth applying?
2. Which one would you recommend and why?

I see some of them can be a little fussy to apply and require application to be carried out indoors and the car to be kept free of water on the screens for 24hrs, I'm thinking of popping something on the glass for the winter months but don't have access to a garage at the moment so just need something quick and easy to apply.

Also why are there two types of the Gtecniq? G5 and G1 ?

Aside from the durability what else differs?

I'm probably being daft but can't see why a company would produce 2 products that do the same thing and only differ in durability?

Why not just produce the better of the 2?

  Corsa Van. Meh.
I think the application of G5 a lot more simple as it is just a wipe on/wipe off product.

Search g1 v g5, covered not that long ago

G5 very easy to apply but doesn't last as long against wipers and washer jets as g1, typically starts to remove water at a wind speed of 30mph.

G1 requires 3layers to the windscreen, 1 for other glass and takes about an hour. Lasts years but doesn't start to remove water effectively to about 50

Hmm sounds like the G5 is the one to go for as to and from work is a fair bit of town driving at low speed.

I went for G5 as i mainly do town driving, i tend to apply it once a month or so which isn't too bad. Ive had the bottle three months now and it seems like i have barely touched it.

I have G1 on mine, it's a great product but as has been said, you do have to be travelling at some speed for it to work. Making G5 the better product imo, even if it isn't as durable.

But yes, glass sealants definitely are worth applying!

I've tried g5, and now I've got g1 on my screen

Water moves at lower speeds than g5 I've found

It does however depend on how heavy the rain is, and the angle of the screen

Some cars will benefit more from g5, however I think the clios are best with g1

I applied G1 as I travelled to Birmingham from Manchester each weekend, so 60+ MPH on the motorway for 90% of the journey. It is still beading 2 years later.

However, around town, I now need to apply G5 as my car barely moves/goes above 60.

*and yes they are worth it - a lot of the time I don't need to use my wipers.

My Mrs uses the G1, its quite surprising how long it lasts (not sure about years but certainly many months even if you have to use your wipers quite often still due to low speed driving).

I used to use rain-ex before which was excellent but only lasted a few weeks at best, I believe G5 is more like that.

With proper prep, the long lasting GT products will last for years. The C4 on my plastics is still beading from March 2011.

RainX works well on the side windows, agreed. But on the front screen it will just wipe away/degrade with use of the sprayers.

Well its been quite a few months now and still working (although I think perhaps a little less than it did initially, still well though), and with my mrs being as OCD as she is, im sure it will have had proper prep, especially as the glass was only a week old when it was applied ;)

Plastics are different though, cause they dont have wipers going over them. so I would never expect as long from any windscreen sealant.

Stick some AG EGP on your screen and watch it the water bead away ;)

and smear

and blur when washer jets are used.

and last all of about a week with use of the wipers.

It's not a good idea!

G1 and G5 all depend on the angle of your windscreen and the windspeep over it, not necessarily the speed your are travelling. I have G1 on both cars after trying G5 and suits my needs, as typically when I am driving round towns I'm going to slow for G5 to work properly.

A recent experience with G1 driving in rain, the surfboard bag on the roof slipped so flapped down and touched the screen, couldn't use wipers as it would hit it. Was driving at 40mph so left a decent gap to the car in front as we couldn't stop safely, and the wind created by cars in the opposite direction was enough to keep 3/4 of the screen clear.

Ive never had EGP smear or blur. A few coats and it lasts a while. Fair enough it might not last thaaaat long but it saves me going and buying real windscreen stuffA

G1. Awesome stuff.

Applied mine in May. Three coats to the front screen and one coat elsewhere. It still beads like crazy.

No wipers on the motorway in the rain FTW.

removing G1 is probably the only time people will encounter troubles with it. that or wipers blades need replacing and causing juddering.

It's just such big step up from the likes of rainx etc

I had judder for the first time the other day. Realised my rear windscreen wiper was past its best.

Other than that, easily 18 months of sheeting web washing, beading when raining and moving beads when driving!

The juddering calms down though.

It can be hard to remove the residue IMO, even with the residue remover that is supplied. No big deal though

Bit of a bump...

Is there anywhere offering a drive in drive out service for G1 application?

  Golf GT & A4 Avant
Other than the authorised GT detailers I wouldn't have thought so.

Im sure there would be a local member that's used it before

Your friendly, neighbourhood enthusiast is your best bet, Mike. Try Christopher, Jamesbryan, Mikey Bifcaids etc.
