Going from orbital to rotory.

Right i have been using a Megs g220 and i love it, however now i have got used to that im thinking of moving to a rotory polisher - possibly a kestral.

Although the g220 does the job it does take its time and is a bit pisch for removing the deeper RDS. Its lacking a bit of something imo.

Has anyone done this before and can you offer any advice? Should i be worried lol

I have been reading dave KG's guide on DW but wanted some input on here :)

Is it THAT easy to ruin a car with one?

i went straight to a rotary and although i havnt had chance to do much correction on my car yet, done a few other cars so i havnt ruined anyones car lol

i am very cautious with it and alway start on the lightest cut pad and polish and just work up.

Easier to burn through Luke, but not something that I am up on. But will certainly borrow it if/when you buy one ;)

Ali is currently fiddling with one that he has borrowed IIRC.

I is. It's bloody heavy tho!! But alot more accurate than the PC. Doesn't vibrate as much either. I'll still refine with Orbital tho...I didn't have the right sized pads tho, to it was folding at the edges!

Orbital I think is good for getting into tight spaces ect... but I really thought you would be using a rotary Jamie.

Nein lover. Thinking of upping to one soon, but for now, no need really :)

Fancy buying me one? Birthday soon!

If your only playing as a hobby there really is no need to up to a rotary. Main positive it has over random orbital is speed, and IMO using any machine on a car speed isnt something to think of.

You say your G220 is unable to combat some of the RDS you have come across. In Theory a DA can combat anything a rotory can with the right pad/polish combo just takes a little longer.

Much better things to invest in IMO

Not necessarily mate. Depends on the hardness of the clear coat also. Rotary are much better as they generate more heat and hense enhance correction.

Best thing to do is watch the vids on you tube (meguiars used to have one on there, but can't find it now). Most cheap rotary's don't have clutch to allow torque adjustment on them. The expensive ones like the makita will maintain the speed regardless of the pressure, so you'll have to be more carefull with ones like that.

Agree with the above, DA's will never produce the same results as a rotary. On some cars you'll get away with it, esp Cellulose paints. But the rotary is much more focused and the correction time is minimal compaired to that of a PC/Etc.

Also cheaper, no need for converters etc.

Pretty sure that's a quid in the Dan Revels Youtube box.

Agreed, however, that it is the speed of the action that cuts through the deeper marks in paint work.

Been thinking about moving to a rotary too. I'd keep the 220 for finishing and probably delicate bits like wing mirrors.

THanks for the response guys.

Gave me something to think about! I didn't really want to keep the g220 as i wanted to sell it on and buy a rotory :(.

Think i need to do a bit more research... Jamie - Grays car is now squeeky clean :D took me from 9 untill 9 +o(! and its still not perfect FFS! Made me think i need rotory even more as some of the scratches and amount of time it took the orbital to break down the polish was really too long.

Going to do a write up within the next few hours. Took LOADS of images - still not seen them though so weather i catched the swirl removal i am unsure. You can deffo tell the difference though.

keep your eyes pealed in this section as its a big' un!

My g220 broke so i bought the Kestrel rotary... best thing i ever did and i wish i didnt ever get the g220.

Just alot better to work with and quicker to correct. Might be a bit dodgy at first but 30mins in and you feel alot more confident.

Keep the thing moving and concentrate and you wont burn through any clear coat.

Russ informed me that i4detailing are still doing them cheap so get in there ;)

Luke, bumping this due to a recent email from a customer off here.

I have the option on one of these;

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polis...-silverstorm-39-rotary-polisher/prod_513.html

I don't use a rotary but have always thought of upgrading for certain difficult marks on mine and customer cars.

Thoughts?

That model of rotary from Silverline is now discontinued.

The new model is called a 'Silverstorm' and its dial-up speed control now maintains an even rate of RPM's even when putting pressure on to revive the dullest of finishes.

Sorry Matt, you are right, I had made the assumption it was a typo from the member off here.

I was hoping that either yourself or CYC would come back. Personal opinions from yourself on Kestrel vs Silverstorm please?

Thanks for the PM Matt, I will look into which model it is. May well be some more business coming your way, sooner than I thought :)

Im meeting up with a member off here in a weeks ish time to play with the rotory. I will be purchasing the kestral machine and selling my megs g220 as i have heard good things about it

I will be keeping both, Luke mate. I feel that for mine, the PC is just fine and buzzes through the marks (or lack there of!) in seconds.

Rotary will be for the next purchase ;)

My neighbours had White Details.co.uk over to do his Leon yesterday.
Got talking to him as he did my Trophy ages ago.
He uses the Kestral rotary & the results & speed were stunning, is the £70 price correct as thats well cheapo?
