short list from my own (limited) experience of faults that i spotted on the cars that i looked at:
- PAS fluid leaks (visual inspection - need to be able to scrub around underneath)
- worn diff/gearbox - jack it up and spin a wheel - noticeably noisy if worn. mine broke (costing me £900 to replace) after 6 months of ownership. i wish i'd checked as described before buying the car
- dephaser - 'whistling' noise at high RPMs
- bodywork repairs - check the usual; good tip for checking the back end is to unscrew the rear lamp clusters and check for overspray/masking lines on the exposed panel edge
- engine management problems - stuttering/misfiring at part throttle
tbh, you could come up with an enourmous list of potential problems taken from other people's experiences but i guess there's a limit to what you can check for in any one car. good luck with it anyway!

Well were back! had a good look around it, alloys were the major bad point all 4 curbed 
53 reg only done 28k!! body work fantastic!!!!!!!!!! the front end is un stone chipped or had very few (unlike mine!!) drived really well felt solid in all corners, there putting a new mot on it nxt week for him! has been kept in the garage after every outing and covered up!
so yes he bought it - price £5700 he wouldn't move much on the price. picking up nxt fri.

The backbox WILL break due to it being made from tinfoil and toffee crisp wrappers. Engine mounts and as said above high milers check for cam belt change.

Oh that is very nice! Lowered one notch and 35mm at the front?? Mine is bog standard bar k and n panel filter, but it is a beast. Still puts a big smile on my face!!!! Should i really sell it, or keep both? lol
What do you think of the cup compared to the rallye? Ive driven gib172's cup a fair bit and i love it. I love the economy of them as well!!!!!!!!!!!

Chopper 1 - keep the Rallye!! Wish I'd never got rid of my gti-6 - the only thing I find better about the 172 is the fuel economy!! My 6 used to drink like a b*****d (with just exhaust, decat, k&n etc etc)

Yes this is what i am liking a lot about the cup. 40 mpg should be possible on a motorway run should it? with high 30's as an average if driven sensibly? Oh i cant wait until friday!!!!!!!!
Rallye will maybe do 30 mpg if it is driven by my mother, lol, and more like 25 when im going to work in it ha. But my god, it doesnt half put a smile on my face. If this cup disappoints, im getting another Rallye!!!!!
